After sweeping Cody at home last Wednesday and defeating Worland on the road on Monday with a final score of 13-7, the Lovell Mustangs Legion C team have been in a slump by losing their last three games.

Against the Cody Cubs, the Mustangs seemed to be firing on all cylinders as they cruised to 17-7 and 7-6 victories.

In the second game in Worland, the Mustangs fell 11-10. They then hosted a doubleheader with the Powell Pioneers on Wednesday night and lost 12-6 and 16-3.

The Mustangs trailed by as many as five runs in the opening game but were able to come back and score 10 runs in the seventh inning to get the win.

“I was really proud of our resilience the first game against Worland,” coach Jonathan Morgan said. “Talk about finishing strong, although our pitching wasn’t overly efficient, we were able to battle and come out with the win.”

Aaiden Walker, Ryan Grant and Zander Stahl each had two hits in the game, while Dax Mangus, Bradley Mickelson, Taysen Yates and Dane Wilson had one apiece.

Five pitchers shared the responsibilities on the mound for the Mustangs and combined for seven strikeouts, walked nine and only gave up five hits.

“The second game was kind of the same story,” Coach Morgan said. “We unfortunately couldn’t get another run to extend the game. But I am proud of how the boys never gave up in either game. We need to work on starting stronger and not having to rely on big late innings to compete.”

The Mustangs trailed 8-1 after the second inning before a valiant effort left them just short by one run.

Mickelson and Walker had a pair of hits to lead the Mustangs at the plate. Mangus, Yates and Stahl added one each for a team total of seven hits.

Stahl, Lukas Miller and Madden Cooley pitched the six innings, giving up 11 runs (six earned), walking nine and striking out four Worland batters.

In the two games played on Tuesday night, the Pioneers outscored the Mustangs 28-9.

For game one, Walker went 2-for-4 at the plate while Cooley, Grant, Mickelson, Stahl and Wilson connected for one each.

Walker and Mickelson split the game on the mound and the duo collected nine strikeouts, walked seven Pioneers and allowed 12 runs on 10 hits.

In the second game, the Pioneers were able to plate runs in every inning and the Mustangs’ only three runs all came in the first inning before their bats went cold.

The Mustangs only had three hits in the game coming from Grant, Mickelson and Xaden Baxendale.

Grant, Wilson and Mangus hurled five innings on the mound for a combined five strikeouts, 16 walks and four hits.

The only games on the schedule for this week are set for Tuesday evening when the Mustangs will travel to Powell for another doubleheader beginning at 5/7 p.m.
