After opening the season with four exhibition games against Miles City in Cowley April 4-5, splitting a pair of doubleheaders, the Lovell Mustangs opened the season officially Saturday in Sheridan, dropping both games of a doubleheader to the Sheridan Troopers 7-1 and 9-4.

In game one the Troopers jumped on Lovell starter Kyle Wilson for four runs in the first inning and two in the second before Wilson and reliever Kannon Owens settled down and allowed only one more run the rest of the game.

The Mustangs scored their lone run in the top of the sixth when Tucker Jackson reached base on an error and scored on a single by Wilson.

Wilson allowed four hits and six runs, five earned, in two innings of work, walking four and striking out two. Owens allowed one run in four innings on the mound on three hits and two walks, fanning two.

In game two, Sheridan plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning off Lovell starter Jackson, but the Mustangs matched the pair in the top of the third on a two-run triple by Alex Hedges.

Sheridan scored two in the bottom of the frame, single runs in the fourth and fifth and three more in the sixth to lead 9-2 before the Mustangs plated two in the top of the seventh as Jackson scored on a wild pitch and Hedges came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Owen Edwards.

Jackson took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, in three innings of work on three hits and a walk while fanning one. Hedges threw three innings in relief, allowing six hits and five runs, two earned, walking one and fanning one.

Hedges and Lafe Files led the Mustangs with two hits each.

Although the Chronicle has not received an official schedule, the app Gamechanger shows that the Mustangs will next host Lockwood, Montana, Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m.
