Mustangs pull off late comeback
The Lovell Mustangs managed to put together enough runs at the end of the game against the Lockwood Razorbacks on Saturday afternoon in Cowley to complete a comeback victory, 11-10 in 10 innings of work.
Lockwood held a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh when the Mustangs tallied four runs to narrow the gap and another two in the eighth to tie it up.
Both teams rallied to score another run each in the ninth to send it into an extra inning before Lovell walked off the final run in the bottom of the tenth.
The Mustangs’ bats were hot as they connected for 16 hits in the game, led by Alex Hedges, who went 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Hedges doubled in the fifth, scoring two, doubled in the seventh to score one and singled in the eighth to plate one.
Jacob Bischoff also had four hits for the Mustangs, while Cash Wassmer added three.
Tucker Jackson had two key hits, and Jack Pharoah, Rocco Rael and Aaidan Walker had one apiece.
Wassmer got the start on the mound for the Mustangs and went three complete innings. He struck out four and gave up six runs (three earned).
Jackson came in and dominated the final seven innings it took to earn the win by striking out 13 Razorbacks, allowing four runs and only walking two batters.
EXPOS TIE
On Friday, the Mustangs traveled to Billings to face the Expos, and the game ended in a 5-5 tie after the seventh inning because it got too dark to continue playing on the field without lights.
The Expos outhit the Mustangs 7-2 in the game, but Lovell took advantage of the nine walks by Expos pitchers.
The lone hits came from Carlos Rodriguez, who didn’t play on Saturday due to Greybull’s graduation, and Wassmer.
Hedges went five innings on the mound for the Mustangs, striking out six Expos, walking three and giving up three runs, one earned.
Rodriguez came in and closed the final two innings and earned five strikeouts out of the six outs needed.
Although he walked three batters to lead to two runs scored, both were earned.
The Mustangs next play a doubleheader in Laurel at 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, then host the Billings Expos on Tuesday with game times at 5 and 7 p.m.
