The Cowley Progress

Wyoming is one state without a street railway system. The last trolley from the state’s last electric line at Sheridan has been pulled. Inability to operate without adequate fares and competition of the auto were the reasons for the abandonment of the line. Next to the last line at Cheyenne was abandoned a year ago.

A letter was received this week from Major General Lucas V. Beau, commander of the Civil Air Patrol, USAF, advising Cadet John R. Sadler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gage Sadler of Lovell, that he has been chosen to represent his country, United States Air Force and the Civil Air Patrol on a tour of Italy as part of the 1951 international cadet exchange program. Bolling Air Force base, Washington, D.C., will be the point of departure from the U.S. to Italy.

Anna’s column, By Anna Parks: I’ve always smiled to myself when people wore copper bracelets to relieve arthritis. The folks remedy has been in disrepute for years, but now researchers have discovered there may be truth in the bromide. Copper, they found reacts with skin chemicals to produce an anesthetic called ethylene, which can be absorbed into the body. Does anyone have an extra copper bracelet?

Arson was reported at the Frannie Elementary on Saturday, June 30. According to Sheriff Dave Mattis, someone broke a window in the library and then was able to start a fire inside the room that eventually burned itself out. The fire did destroy some books on tape, a counter top and a window sill. Smoke damage to the room also occurred.

During the ensuing work meeting budget discussion, Councilman Scott Allred brought up the possibility of the town closing down its emergency services dispatching center and consolidating dispatching with the Big Horn County Sheriff’s dispatch center in Basin. Town Clerk/Treasurer Valerie Beal said having a separate dispatching center is costing the town $170,000 net per year over and above payments made to the town.
