The Lovell Woman’s Club held their annual dinner party for the teachers Friday, Sept. 8, at the school lunchroom. About 150 members and guests attended. … Mr. Francis Rowe and Mrs. Ralph Stahle played a trumpet and accordian duet. Their numbers included “The Waltz You Saved for Me” and “Somewhere in Old Wyoming.”

Dick Jolley, president of the school board, introduced the new superintendent of schools, Ralph Belnap. Mrs. Bob Bowman played her accordian and sang two numbers, “Sleep Kentucky Babe” and “When Love is Kind.” … The group then transferred to the gymnasium, where a group of Mrs. Max Coray’s dance pupils presented a ballet number.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Johnson were introduced along with the members of their square dance group. They performed two square dances, “Hoedown Polka” and “San Antonio Rose,” after which all of the members and guests were asked to join in the dancing.

Approximately 15 Lovell High School students attended the school board meeting Monday night to dispute the current hair and dress code. More stood outside the door, unable to squeeze into the small room.

Rick Mills, spokesman for the delegation, told the board members they were knowingly violating the Wyoming Statutes of Education, which states that boys and girls can’t be discriminated against. According to Mills, if girls aren’t told how long their hair can grow, neither should boys.

When the ensuing argument died down, board member Kirk Jameson said the group was talking to the wrong people and should be discussing the issue with the school’s student council, the body which sets the dress code. The current code for hair length requires hair on males not to go below a regular shirt collar and a portion of the ears to show.

Hair length wasn’t the only restriction the students took issue with. “Why can’t girls wear Levis?” Linda Harris asked the board. “Boys can.”

“I move we vote to pay the bills,” board member Jack Pearson said, obviously trying to end the 1½ hour debate.

Viewers of the “Good Morning America” program may have noticed the sign that covers the front of the new ABC Disney Studios building and frequently introduces the program. One of the engineers creating the computerized electronic display was former Lovell native Mike Lely. The sign features an innovative wrap-around design that accommodates the curvature of the New York building located in Times Square.

Portraits of roaring grizzly bears greeted students at Rocky Mountain Middle/High School when students returned to school following their summer break. The large murals were painted by local artist Ronda Schroeder in both gymnasiums and in an entryway leading from the locker rooms to the gym. Schroeder took on the task of rendering the bigger-than-life murals depicting the school’s grizzly bear mascot during the summer months.
