The Cowley Progress

Instruments producing a clashing sound, such as cymbals and drums, are supposed to be the first used by musicians, because people understood time before they knew anything about tune. Then followed the reed, the pipe and other wind instruments, while the string instrument was a later product of civilization. The Greek fable attributes the invention of the lute to the mischievous god Hermes, who on the first day of his life killed a tortoise, tied seven strings across the shell and picked them with a small stick, singing to this accompaniment with much satisfaction.

75 years ago, March 8, 1951

The Kane Homemakers Club met at the clubhouse on February 28 with a one o’clock potluck luncheon. Elsie Snell was hostess, and she brought the white elephant that was won by Frieda Gams. Mrs. Albert Fink brought the “chance cake,” and it was won by Pauline Lowe. Mrs. Freida Gams and Mrs. Hannah Fink gave a very interesting demonstration on coats and suits.

50 years ago, March 4, 1976

The Lovell Chronicle

Frannie will be the site of a new Wyoming Revenue Department port of entry building, following action by the state legislature Monday. A six-member staff is anticipated at the building, which apparently will be placed right in Frannie near the new tennis courts. The legislature reached a compromise Monday and approved $113,600 for the building and $166,482 for the staff and supporting services.

The Lovell Chronicle

The Lovell High School drill team recaptured the 1A/2A state championship from Rocky Mountain, who won in 2000. The four seniors – Brook Croft, Keela Collins, JanaLee Moncur and Lauren White – have been part of three state championships. The team was state runner-up last year. Joining the seniors this year were junior Sarah Croy, sophomores Sara Gerhardt, Tianne Tippetts and April Walker and freshmen Devan Allred, Kirra Baxendale, Bridget Ferbrache and Morgan Croft. Coach Darlene Moncur said she was pleased with the girls’ performance, especially receiving all 15 points in the communication category.

The Lovell Chronicle

Following many years of service to her patients at North Big Horn Hospital Clinic, popular provider Mary Freund, FNP, GNP-BC will be moving on to take on the challenge of setting up a clinic that will take care of the health needs of migrant workers in the Big Horn Basin. Her tenure at NBHH will end in May.
