We want to serve warning to those who make a practice of turning their cows and horses out on the streets at night to prey upon people’s gardens as some have this week, that they need not be at all surprised to see their animals shot full of holes. If one can get no protection in an incorporated town from animal depredations one will have to resort to measures of self-protection. The Editor’s entire corn crop and much other garden truck was ruined this week by stray cows, and they weren’t range stock either, because the owners got them out as soon as it became daylight.

75 years ago, Aug. 16, 1951

The Lovell Chronicle

The first pageant to select a local girl as a candidate for the state competition for Miss Wyoming was held at the Hyart Theatre last Thursday evening. It attracted a capacity crowd to witness the talents and appearance of the 12 girls who entered the contest, which was sponsored by the Lovell Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Miss Lorece Keller of Lovell was the final winner with Miss Marian Tebbs of Cowley and Virginia White of Frannie placing second and third. Miss Keller sang the Jewell Song from the opera “Faust” as her selection for the talent section, and the other two were piano soloists.

50 years ago, Aug. 12, 1976

The Lovell Chronicle

Bad soil has been blamed as the cause of the loss of about 50 percent of the roses in the new rose gardens on the east end of Main. Town manager Bob Snedeker presented the results of soil tests made in the gardens by Northwest Analytical Lab, Powell. Apparently, soil brought in for the gardens was too high in salts and potassium for the roses.

Melissa Lynnette Fowler and Jamon Robert Zabel announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage on Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in the Billings Montana LDS Temple. Melissa is the daughter of Dale and Peggy Fowler of Lovell. She is a 2001 graduate of the University of Wyoming and just completed her internship in exercise physiology with Verizon Wireless in Bedminster, New Jersey. 

Jamon is the son of Robert and Bonnie Zabel of Gillette and is a 1995 graduate of Campbell County High School. He has completed a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California, Arcadia Mission and is continuing his education at the University of Wyoming, where he is working toward a degree in business administration.

The Lovell Chronicle

Compassion, leadership, creativity and an always positive attitude are just a few of the criteria that have won North Big Horn Hospital’s Chief of Nursing Tina Toner the Norman S. Holt Award for Nursing Excellence. The Wyoming Hospital Association has presented the award annually since 1982 to recognize nurses who are outstanding in their field. This is the first time in the history of NBHH that a nurse from the hospital has won the prestigious award, though many names have been submitted for consideration over the years.
