The Cowley Progress

To those who believe the present system of things is “all there is – there is no more,” that ours is the only really civilized period the world has ever known, it might be enlightening to learn that a few centuries before the advent of Christ there was established a library containing between six and seven hundred thousand volumes or rolls. This was the great library of Alexandria, founded by the first of the Ptolemies. 

Although most of the temples of Babylonia, which was the seat of a learned and literary people many hundreds of years before the advent of Christ, contained a library of clay tablets in the cuneiform writing of the day, the library at Alexandria, with its half-million rolls of manuscripts, is the first known library in the modern sense of the word.

The Lovell Chronicle

Cal Taggart, Ward Myers and Marlo Robertson of the Commercial Club airport improvement committee met with the Lovell town council Monday evening to discuss a joint airport with Cowley. Elman Crosby and Lawrence Jensen, members of the Cowley town council were also present. The Lovell councilmen approved the Cowley site and pledged whatever assistance they could offer without funds, but including acceptance and maintenance at a later date.

A young Byron man has been released from the hospital here after treatment for a rattlesnake bite. Scott Petrich, 19, was nicked on a middle finger of his left hand by one fang of the rattlesnake he had caught for his terrarium Saturday afternoon near Byron. Petrich tried to drive to the Lovell hospital but noticed he was nearly blacking out midway there. He stopped and was finally forced to lie down in the middle of Highway 14A as someone stopped to help him get to the hospital.

The Lovell Chronicle

Byron fourth and fifth grade students own a piece of the rain forest. The students raised funds by selling chocolate, raising more than $400 to be able to purchase 10 acres of rain forest in the Madre De Las Aguas (Mother of the Waters) in the Dominican Republic. 

The area where the students purchased land is a habitat for thousands of rare and beautiful trees, orchids, ferns, butterflies, birds, fish, lizards, frogs, bats and other plants and animals. It is also home of the endangered Hispaniolan solenodon.

The Lovell Chronicle

Veterans of all eras and military service, surviving spouses, family members and others were invited to attend a special “Welcome Home Day” at the Lovell Community Center celebrating their sacrifice and service. Local veteran Frank Wilkerson was one of the speakers at the event. A World War II veteran, Wilkerson joined the U.S. Navy on June 10, 1944, when he was only 17 years old.

The youngest veteran in attendance at the Welcome Home Day celebration Friday was Kris Hutchinson of Lovell, who was deployed twice to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.
