The Cowley Progress

The post office, which has long been located in a leaky old joint, was this week moved to more congenial quarters, but a little farther west – in the Watkins brick barber shop building. We are glad that the change has been made, and it was made with scarcely any interruption. The whole thing is a vast improvement over the old location, everything being so conveniently arranged. The result is the neatest post office Cowley has ever had but now, unhappily, we have no barber shop.

Mrs. Vivian Gray announced this week that she had sold the Bandbox Cleaners to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lanham of Billings and was retiring from the business. The change in ownership will take effect at the end of this week. The Bandbox was established as a new business in Lovell by Mrs. Gray and the late Wayne Gray nine years ago. They operated very successfully while building up the business with careful cleaning. The new owners are experienced in the cleaning business, will retain the same employees and will appreciate the continued patronage of Bandbox customers.

The sale of Great Western Sugar Company is off. Great Western United stockholders and debenture holders overwhelmingly voted down the sale of the sugar company to growers Monday.

Meanwhile, members of the Great Western Producers Cooperative were threatening retaliation, and Robert Owen, GWPC president, said the growers would not give up their efforts to buy the company. Locally, beet growers talked of cutting their beet acreage and in some instances quitting raising beets completely.
