Nellie Tayloe Ross on Monday at 12:20 o’clock became governor of Wyoming, the first woman to be inducted as chief executive of an American commonwealth.
The inauguration of Governor Ross was perhaps the first time in history that a governor elect wore a hat during the ceremony of inauguration. Mrs. Ross was attired in gown and hat of black, symbolic of mourning for the late governor William B. Ross.
She was perfectly composed and delivered her inaugural statement in even, clear tones, which were pitched so low, however, that the majority of the auditors who crowded the chamber floor and the overlooking galleries caught only fragments of the statement.

What’s faster than a Mormon cricket? Able to pass mere mortals with the touch of his toe? Crusin’ Cal, that’s who! Big Horn County’s Senator Cal Taggart was stopped on his way to Governor Herschler’s inauguration while humming along in his Mercedes at a cool 102 mph. According to an 1886 law, legislators are privileged from arrest on their way to and from the session. Under that same law, which allows one day for each 25 miles they must travel, Taggart could be legally exempt from the ticket, or from any other during that period.
