The Cowley Progress

Cheyenne, Wyo. – Two gavels made from the wood of the famous Washington elm have been received by Frank D. Lucas, Secretary of State. The gavels were presented by the city of Cambridge, Mass., where the elm stood. The inscription on the gavels is “A piece of the Washington elm which formerly stood in Cambridge,  Mass., presented by the city of Cambridge, 1924.” The gavels probably were made for the legislature, but there was some unavoidable delay in sending them.

The Big Horn Basin Oddfellows Association, comprising lodges of Cody, Powell, Lovell, Greybull, Basin, Worland, Thermopolis and Riverton, held its district meeting Saturday in the Oddfellows hall in Lovell. Cody members were prevented from attending by the severe storm of Friday night. Several visiting brothers were present from Billings; also a large percentage of local members attended.

All the visiting speakers were unanimous in their praise and congratulations on the new building, which has just been completed. The scheduled dedication of the new building was postponed owing to the illness of the principal speaker, past grand master W.W. Axon of Casper.

The Lovell Chronicle

A Lovell High School social studies teacher received a special award this week, one of a handful of Wyoming teachers to receive the 2015 Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award. Honored was Caleb Sanders, who teaches American history, world geography and health/physical education. He has 12 years of teaching experience, 7½ years at LHS.

“Our time as educators can be filled with so many things that it is easy to get lost in a collection of wasteful or unproductive moments,” Sanders said. “My teaching philosophy is to make sure that I love God, love myself, love what I teach and love who I teach. I find that if I do these things everything else seems to fall in place.”
