The Cowley Progress

As the result of Gov. Nellie Tayloe Ross’ pronouncement against prohibition law violations, patrons of soft drink parlors are having their drinks closely scrutinized by minions of the law. Additional enforcement officers and newly-sworn deputy sheriffs are standing guard at all soft drink dispensaries, pool halls and billiard parlors.

Bert Marchant met with an accident on the main street of Cowley Saturday afternoon. He was on the street in front of the garage when a car driven by Dickie Marchant drove up to the curb to park. The street was icy, and his brakes failed to stop the car, and it ran into Bert, knocking him through the garage window. He was rushed to the hospital, where he is being treated for severe bruises and cuts.

KTWO television, Casper, addressed its editorial of January 29 to the problems hampering the construction of the transpark road (Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area).

After mentioning the environmental movement in Wyoming, and paralleling it to the organized labor movement of the first half of the century, KTWO went on to say “Now that the environmental movement has the legal processes available to it as a result of popular support, it is important that the movement keep the public on its side.

“Unreasonable positions, or pure obstructionism, could return public opinion against it very quickly. In our opinion there are such obstructionists at work in an area that directly affects Wyoming.”

Lovell is $1,500 closer to having bicycle racks along Main Street thanks to a grant received by the Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce in December. Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce Office Manager Jackie Heinert wrote the $1,500 grant to the People of Bikes Foundation in September. She was notified in a letter dated December 18 that the chamber had received the grant.

The Lovell High School ag department has agreed to take on the construction of the bike racks as a class project. In addition to the grant, the chamber has received private donations totaling another $1,700 for materials and to pay a nominal fee per rack that the LHS ag department will charge.
