The Cowley Progress

Berlin – Moveable glass eyes which are hard to distinguish from normal eyes because they were subject to the control of optic muscles have been successfully fitted by Dr. Carl Mueller of Jena, noted artificial eye specialist. Dr. Mueller found that in 90 out of 100 cases of the loss of an eye the muscles and nerves controlling the movement of the eye were unimpaired.

He said he fastens connective muscle tissue of animals to a glass eye and grafts these tissues onto the remnants of the human eye muscles. The extremely delicate operation requires about an hour, and he has been successful in from 80 to 90 percent of his cases. Success depends to a large extent, he asserted, upon the condition of the eye socket after the loss of the eye.

75 years ago, May 3, 1951

The Lovell Chronicle

The Western Construction Company of Lovell, Bob Smithson and Joe Earl being the partners and operators of the concern, started the building of a 30-unit motel in Lovell this week. The court is being erected on the corner lot across the street from the Keil Grocery on Main Street, three blocks from the business district of the town. In addition to the 30 rental units, which will be constructed in a U-shape around the outside of the property, there will be a residence and office building in the center.

Construction of the transpark highway to Barry’s Landing could be completed by midsummer 1977 if everything moves along smoothly from here. The $2.7 million contract for constructing the 9.6 mile segment from Devil’s Canyon Overlook was awarded to R.J. Studer and Sons of Billings, Sen. Cliff Hansen said Tuesday.

Senior Julie Skinner is the 2001 winner of the John Philip Sousa Award as the top member of the Lovell High School band program. Skinner plays the trumpet and was selected three times for the Wyoming All-State Band. She was also selected for District Music Clinic for four years and performed at the District Music Festival for four years.

She played in both the LHS concert and jazz bands for four years and was selected for the University of Wyoming Festival of Winds and Strings for three years. She is a member of the Lovell Mustang Band and is this year’s aide for Director Rick Parmer. Skinner plans to major in music at the University of Wyoming.

Rocky Mountain High School junior Brian Crawford loves to wrestle. It’s something he’s been doing since he was in the third grade. Since those early days, Crawford has worked hard and seen the results of that hard work with second place state wins in both his freshman and sophomore years and a first at 2A State wrestling during this year’s wrestling season. 

On the heels of his latest State win, Crawford bested wrestlers from 2A, 3A and 4A schools in freestyle and Greco-Roman style wrestling, giving him distinctive honor as a triple-crown winner. Now Crawford has been afforded the opportunity to represent the state of Wyoming in a 2016 cultural exchange experience in Auckland, New Zealand.
