100 years ago

June 11, 1925

While driving a horse and buggy on the road south of town yesterday, Mrs. Jae Hall, mother of Mr. Ivan Hall, was badly injured due to the fact one of the shafts came loose, causing the horse to run away. She was thrown out of the buggy and knocked unconscious. She is badly bruised and had to have three stitches, but she will soon be up and about. 

Mr. Arthur Zaring returned to Basin on Monday from Laramie where he has been attending school for the past year. He arrived on crutches, the result of an attempt to slide into a base in a ball game about six weeks ago. 

75 years ago

June 8, 1950

David L. Kost, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ned F. Kost Sr., of Orchard Bench, has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, according to Sergeant T. Williams, armed forces recruiting officer. David became the second 1950 graduate of Basin High School to enlist in the Air Force. He was preceded last week by Cart Beck. The two will leave today for Denver at which point they will be taken into the service. 

Mr. and Mrs. William Paumer and daughter Virginia of Hyattville, accompanied by Mrs. Evelyn Hutchinson of Basin, left Wednesday for Denver where Miss Paumer will enter business college.

June 12, 1975

Members of the Basin Chamber of Commerce voted at their luncheon meeting last Wednesday to sponsor Sheri Curtiss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DuWaine Curtiss, as a contestant in the Miss Teen Queen state contest which will take place June 21. 

Those students qualifying for the University of Wyoming dean’s honor roll during the spring semester include: Shannon L Batenhorst, Kathleen Jane Brown, John Eggerman from Basin, Michael Bohl, Tom Davidson and Bud Fackrell all of Burlington and D. Lynn Paumer of Manderson. 

Leaving Sunday for Douglas where they will be delegates to the American Legion Wyo. Boys State were Marty Wright of Basin, Jeff Tharp of Manderson and Roger Michaels of Burlington. 

Marilyn Sue Darr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Darr, was named to the president’s honor roll for the spring term. Marilyn is a student at the University of Wyoming at Laramie.

There was a flurry of activity at the Big Horn County courthouse last week as 11 candidates, 10 of them Republicans, filed for the vacant four-year term on the Big Horn County Commission. That seat is currently held by R. Ray Peterson, a Cowley Republican who announced last month that he would not be seeking reelection. Republicans filing for the office were William  “Bill”  Duncan, Stanley Jones, Joseph Prisbe and Tom Goton from the south end. North end filers include Tracy Beal, Reed Williams, Scott Caturia, Ron Salyer, Brett Crosby and Joe Mooney. Elinor Cruze was the only Democrat to enter the race. 

A reception honoring Milton and Loretta Hyatt on their 50th wedding anniversary, hosted by the couple’s children and grandchildren, was held at Antone’s on May 28. Loretta, a nurse from Nebraska, met Milton in 1949 when she was employed at the hospital in Worland and he was a patient. The two were married in Worland in 1950.
