Personal bests highlight the week for swim/dive team
The Big Horn County members of the Powell High School boys swim/dive team swam to 10 personal records over the weekend including 3A qualifiers Hugh Carpenter and Will Fuller. The team had no new qualifiers, but Powell’s Trystan Preator added a new Q time in the 200 IM.
The team’s final home meet was Tuesday with Cody at the Powell Aquatic Center. Results will be in next week’s paper.
Cody Triangular
Powell and Worland met in Cody Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Cody Rec Center for a triangular meet. All three teams swam events together, and the computer tallied the points for each dual meet. The team dual scores were: Powell 186 vs. Worland 62; Cody 140 vs. Powell 135; Cody 172 vs. Worland 59.
Carpenter grabbed first in a tight 200 free race just 0.49 seconds ahead of Cody’s Isaac Woods. Fuller finished .36 seconds behind Jonah Woods in the 50 splash and dash. He also swam a good final 50 in the 100 breast to finish fourth behind Scott Thomas by .36 sec.
The 200 free relay A with Fuller and Conner Mayes finished second, B (including Gabe Buchholz and Branton Moore) fifth.
Other results were:
200 free: Carpenter cut 0.59 seconds (2.01.53), good for first place. 200 IM: Mayes finished third (2:34.71). 50 free: Fuller second (25.11), Taggart Shumway fourth (27.64). 1 meter 6-dives: Shumway fifth (121.75).
100 free: Mayes fourth, cut 2.69 seconds (59.76); Buchholz cut 2.01 seconds (1:05.21) for eighth; Moore cut 0.55 for ninth (1:16.88). 200 free relay A with Fuller and Carpenter finished second.
100 back: Buchholz cut 1.53 seconds for fifth (1:14.09). 100 breast: Fuller cut 0.13 seconds for fourth (1:16.53); Carpenter fifth (1:18.29); Moore ninth (1:34.99).
400 free relay A with Mayes and Carpenter first, B with Shumway third.
Bruce Gresly Invitational
The Bruce Gresly Invitational in Lander Saturday was a big meet with 14 teams making a splash in one of the last invitationals of the season. Perennial swimming and diving powerhouse Lander won the meet with 285 points. Buffalo was second with 221. Powell was shorthanded with just nine athletes making the trip but still racked up enough points to finish seventh.
Fuller cut 2.82 seconds in the 200 freestyle for a personal record of 2:12.63. Buchholz cut 2.74 for a good time of 29.20 in the 50 free. Fuller also cut .39 seconds in the 100 free for a time of 55.71, and Carpenter finished seventh in 54.70. Buchholz cut another 3.43 seconds in the 500 free at Lander with a finishing time of 6:55.06. Moore competed in the 100 back and finished in 1:27.30. Carpenter also swam the 100 breast and finished 19th. Shumway dove to 14th in the 11-dive event.
