This week’s spotlight on a Lovell Farmers’ Market vendor features Sarah Pierce, otherwise known as the pickle lady of Frannie. Pierce blames her passion for all things pickled on her husband Joe, who shared his delicious family recipe with her.

At first, Pierce just pickled items from the family garden to share with family and friends. Later, with much encouragement from that same group, she ramped up production and began selling at local farmers’ markets.

“Everybody who tried our pickles said, ‘You can sell that,’ so that’s what I did,” Pierce said. “It’s worked out pretty good, so far.”

As a mother of four, with children ages 11, 9, 7 and 2, she somehow has managed to pickle a wide variety of items from her garden, much to the delight of her customers at the Lovell and Powell farmers’ markets.

Pierce and family live on acreage in the country near Frannie. A few of her offerings include kimchi, sauerkraut and a wide range of other freshly canned veggies.

She said watching her grow and can vegetables has been a great lesson for her children, who understand that “not everything comes from a can.” Through her business, Pierce Pickles, she sells 15 to 20 different flavored pickled items throughout the market season, plus salsas and even pickled eggs at her stand. She also sells items at the Christmas Market held at the Lovell Community Center.

Pierce grew up between Frannie and Deaver, attending local schools. She also manages to find time to act as a Girl Scout leader. She noted that her oldest daughter, Kelsey, has been a great help with the family business, especially watching the youngest while she focuses on her business at the market.

The Farmers’ Market is held every Friday in Armory Park starting at 4:30 p.m., ending around 6 p.m. It will run through the end of September. The event has become a weekly tradition for community members looking to purchase home baked goods, tamales, empanadas, jellies, jams, 3D printed toys and fresh garden vegetables. It’s also become a gathering place to enjoy the company of friends and neighbors and to meet and greet newcomers to the community.
