Police report: Woman catches ‘grandson scam’ in the nick of time

The Lovell Police Department received the following calls for the week of June 23-29:

June 23: 2:51 p.m. – There was a small, female dog found near Lovell Veterinary Service that was reported. The dog was caught, fed, watered and impounded.

June 24: 4:50 p.m. – A report came in from East Third Street of suspected theft from the caller’s truck and garage. The investigation is ongoing.

5:48 p.m. – A homeless man passing through town from Oklahoma lingered around a local gas station for an extended period and was talking to customers. The store manager called to have the man removed from the property. A citizen picked the man up and took him to another gas station outside of town to see if he could catch a ride from a truck driver or someone.

6:05 p.m. – A husband called for assistance, saying that his wife was threatening suicide by overdosing on some pills on Montana Avenue. Officers arrived, and the couple was escorted to North Big Horn Hospital for evaluation.

June 25: 6:11 a.m. – A caller reported that the driver’s side door of a truck was wide open and no one in the area for a long time. Officers contacted the resident who said the truck belonged to his son and he must have forgotten to shut the door. Nothing appeared to be missing.

4:02 p.m. – A noise disturbance was reported at the Lovell Apartments on Montana Avenue. The caller claimed that repeated thumping noises were coming through the walls. Officers arrived and listened for several minutes and heard no thumping or disruptive noises.

June 26: 3:52 p.m. – A woman called the police station saying that she had been scammed for $4,000. She had received a call from a man in Florida that her grandson needed bail money. After realizing it was a scam, she contacted the mailing company to stop the package. The package was flagged and returned to the woman, and she got her money back.

June 27: 9:04 p.m. – A caller dialed the 911 emergency line to report fireworks on East Sixth Street. The officers found the individuals down the back allies of the neighborhood and informed them that fireworks could only be done in town on the Fourth of July.

June 28: 3:13 a.m. – A male and female went into a bathroom at Maverik for more than 20 minutes and the caller was worried. As officers arrived, the caller said that the couple had left and they didn’t feel unsafe any longer.

4:12 p.m. – An elderly woman backed into a vehicle at Family Dollar and left her name, address and insurance before fleeing the scene. A crash report was made, and the woman was contacted.

8:32 p.m. – A caller claimed that the town’s flags along Main Street were lying across the road, blown by the wind. The officer found one flag that had blown down from a broken holder and returned it to the police department.

June 29: 11:51 a.m. – There was a family staying at the RV park behind the Travelodge, and the manager of the hotel called and reported that the female staying in the park was over smoking weed with guests of the hotel and causing a disturbance going into guests’ rooms. A criminal trespass order was given to the female for all Mustang Properties establishments.

5:36 p.m. – A crash was reported between a motorcycle and two vehicles on West Main Street. The motorcycle was towed away from the scene, and injuries are unknown. A citation for failure to maintain a lane of travel was given to one of the drivers.

Note: The Lovell Police Department received nine separate calls about dogs at large or barking dogs at multiple locations and performed 16 traffic stops throughout the week.
