The trio of Lovell High School swimmers of Thomas, Tryon and Sockey contributed to the Powell High School girls swimming and diving team’s first-place finish at the 3A West Absaroka Conference meet last weekend at the Paul Stock Aquatic Center in Cody.
Top relay finishes translate to big points in the team standings, and Paige Thomas teamed up with Patricia Christensen, Aubree Fisher and Addy Powell for a third-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay and with Kiyoko Hayano, Baylee Brence and Kaitlin Diver for second in the 200 free relay. She swam the 200y IM in 2:32.86 for seventh and nabbed fifth in the 100y fly in 1:11.06.
Croix Tryon flew into competition in the 100 fly  at 1:10.19, good for seventh and the 100 breast (1:19.12) for seventh place.
Leah Sockey did not make finals but swam best times in the 50 free (43.27) and 100 free (1:34.41) and teamed up in a 400y free relay.
Conference meet team scores: Powell 324, Douglas 279, Cody 223, Worland 175, Riverton 126, Buffalo 122, Newcastle 52. For more results check out https://wyopreps.com/2023-wyoming-high-school-girls-swimming-conference-....
Winning meets requires both speed and depth. With Thomas state qualified in all eight individual events and Tryon in six, they are great team swimmers able to step in and swim wherever Coach Bob Smartt decides is best for the team.
Sockey made one “Last Chance” to qualify for state at the Cody meet Tuesday, with good swims in the 50 free (43:65) and 100 back (1:39.59).
The state 3A meet starts with diving and swim prelims Friday, Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. (spectator doors open at 1:30) and continues with finals Saturday morning (Nov. 4) at 10 a.m. (doors open at 7:30 a.m.).
Tickets prices: $8 adults, $5 youth/students and are good for both sessions.
