Primary Election Day is August 18

Wyoming’s primary election will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In 2024, the Secretary of State reported 4,832 registered Big Horn County voters at the beginning of the year; 2,644 ballots were cast in that year’s primary election. Registration appears to have grown this year, with 5,812 Big Horn County voters registered in April. 

Twelve polling places, available around the county, are listed below. For qualifying employees, who do not have three or more consecutive nonworking hours during the time the polls are open, Wyoming law requires employers to release workers for one hour outside the meal hour to vote.

REGISTERING TO VOTE

Though the deadline for voter registration has passed, citizens may still register to vote at their polling place on Election Day. New applicants must provide proof of identity, proof of U.S. citizenship and proof of Wyoming residency. The state requires voters to show a form of ID when voting in-person: a Wyoming driver’s license or ID card, tribal ID card, U.S. passport, U.S. military card, driver’s license or ID card from another state, University of Wyoming student ID, Wyoming Community College student ID, Wyoming concealed carry firearm permit, Medicare or Medicaid insurance card. 

WHO DO YOU GET TO VOTE FOR?

Wyoming has a closed primary election system, and electees may only vote in their registered party’s primary election. Municipal races are non-partisan, and all can vote for their respective town officials.

For legislative offices, voters may cast a ballot for the precinct in which they reside. A list of precincts is available at the Secretary of State website. Up for election at the state level, Senate District 19 and House District 26 encompass Emblem, Greybull, Shell, Lovell, Cowley, Byron, Deaver and Frannie. House District 28 serves Basin, Burlington, Otto, Emblem and Greybull. House District 27 includes Basin, Hyattville and Manderson.
