Rebecca Herren places third at Junior State in Riverton
One Rocky Mountain High School wrestler competed at the Wyoming Amateur Wrestling Association Junior and Female State championships in Riverton Saturday.
Senior Rebecca Herren placed third at 130 pounds at the freestyle/Greco tournament.
Rocky Mountain head coach Eddie Whiting, assistant coach Travis Lytle and juniors Triffen Jolley and Colten Bitton refereed at Junior State, and Lytle also coached Herren.
“We had myself and Triffen Jolley and Colten Bitton ref for the North Bighorn USA wrestling club, and I believe that being a referee helps you understand the pressure and process that goes on as you make mistakes but also how much pressure a coach does put on a referee,” Whiting said. “In all I think it was great for them to experience it and for those young athletes to see some of those older athletes doing it as role models. I know my oldest daughter Emsley really enjoys being a referee because she has watched Dad and other athletes do it.
“Right now for our postseason I encourage our athletes to do track, lift and find camps and open mats. For me, I am planning for our camp here at the Cowley Collins Memorial wrestling camp and getting things ready for next season as I try to get new athletes out but keep our returning ones active and ready for next year by opening the mats and finding camps to go to.”
“Becca wrestled two styles that she never had wrestled before, freestyle and Greco, and she wrestled well,” Lytle said. “Freestyle is important for her if she wants to wrestle in college because that is the college women’s style.”
Noted Herren, “It was a very different experience and a lot more difficult than I thought it would be, but a lot of people there had very cool flashy moves.”
