The right person at the right time
On a recent trip down memory lane, I thought about how many times my life was changed for the better by being in the right place, at the right time, to meet the right person.
If I hadn’t been assigned to the same table as Rose in kindergarten, we might not have realized that we liked doing arts and crafts together, which was the start of a life-long, loyal friendship.
If I hadn’t had Mrs. Dispenza to counsel me when I needed education direction as a high school senior, I might not have attended a quality business institute, which laid a good foundation for my career.
If I hadn’t had Marjorie as a caring co-worker while I was job hunting, I may not have been encouraged to apply for what turned out to be the best job ever.
If I hadn’t attended the same conference and had dinner at the same restaurant as John, we may never have met, and would have missed out on a marriage of amazing compatibility.
These serendipitous moments happen for all of us. They are the marvelous turning-points that impact our journey in a positive way. Think about all of the “If I hadn’t met … then I might not have” experiences you’ve had throughout your life. Grab a pen and paper and write them down. Notice how encounters with certain people contributed to moments of happiness, established a rewarding friendship, determined your career path, got you your next job or somehow changed your life course for the better. Notice that at least some of those people did you a kindness with no apparent gain for themselves, except maybe the satisfaction of helping another person.
As we reflect on these encounters, it makes us appreciate the people who have contributed to our success and happiness. It also points out one of the wonders of being alive: that there is a mysterious connection that draws us to certain people as they cross our path. It seems that, if we are spiritually aligned with the good that permeates the universe, the good will always come to us. And it almost always comes through other people.
Your next supposedly chance encounter with a stranger may just turn out to be your most important relationship. So, as you go about your days, keep your heart open, make eye contact, offer a smile and speak kind words as you interact with others. You never know when you’re in the presence of an angel, who is tasked with filling your need for comfort, guidance, inspiration or love. Always anticipate receiving what you need to bring more goodness into your own life, as well as into the lives of others.
Now ponder this: “Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” – Marcel Proust
