RMMS boys basketball team sees first games in Thermopolis
The Rocky Mountain Middle School boys basketball teams opened their season Friday with three competitive games on the road against Thermopolis, giving coaches an early look at where their teams stand and what lies ahead.
A Team Game: Thermopolis 43, Rocky Mtn. 29
The A Team dropped a hard-fought contest, falling 43-29 after staying within striking distance much of the game. Madden Cooley led the scoring effort with 10 points on efficient shooting, while Brooks Brost added 8 and Hudson Moore chipped in 7. Head middle school boys coach McKay Baxendale said the game provided a valuable early measuring stick.
“This game was all about establishing benchmarks for us this season,” Baxendale said. “We didn’t play our best game, but we had chances to take the lead late in that game, which makes me optimistic about our level of play this season.”
B Team Game: Thermopolis 22, Rocky Mtn. 8
The B Team was held to 8 points in a defensive battle but showed effort and hustle throughout the game. Karter Miller scored 4 points to lead the team, while Tripp Hopkin and Aiden Wallman each added 2. The team rebounded aggressively and continued to compete despite offensive struggles. Coach Colton Hodge focused on long-term growth following the game.
“The B Team boys show promise on both sides of the ball, and with more practice, we can refine our team’s collective strength,” Hodge said. “I am proud of the effort and hustle they put in the whole game.”
C Team Game: Rocky Mtn. 33, Thermopolis 31
The C Team delivered the highlight of the night with an exciting 33–31 overtime win. Gus Loyning led all scorers with 26 points, providing a steady offensive spark throughout regulation and overtime. Eli Wallman added 5 points, while Bryden Beall contributed 2.
After several lead changes, the team tightened up defensively in the extra period to secure the victory. Coach Aric Hanusa praised his team’s resilience.
“What an exciting start to the season,” Hanusa said. “We had a few lead changes in the game but were resilient and positive with momentum swings. Our defense stiffened in overtime to secure the win.”
The boys will next play another three-game set in Burlington on Friday at 2 p.m. and two games at Ten Sleep Monday at 4:15 p.m.
