RMMS boys split with Lovell, clobber Ten Sleep

The Rocky Mountain Middle School boys basketball team is off to a strong start for the 2024 season, winning four of six games against Lovell and Ten Sleep this week.

Thursday at home, the eighth graders crushed Lovell 41-12, opening up a 17-2 lead after the first quarter and leading 27-4 at halftime. Mason Moss led the Grizzlies with 12 points, hitting six of seven shots from the field, and Jaxon Hayes added 9, Cooper Winland and Cooper Ward 6 each, Leland Hetland 4 and Gary Gardner and Zach Unruh 2 apiece.

Lovell topped Rocky 33-28 in the seventh-grade game, building an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and carrying that lead forward. Jaxx May scored 14 points, Jaxson Sponsel 10 and Lukas Miller and Jayden Scheeler 2 each.

Lovell edged Rocky 24-23 in the sixth-grade game. Brooks Brost led Rocky with 9 points, and Hudson Moore added 6 points, Madden Cooley 5, Dane Wilson 3.

Monday in Ten Sleep, the eighth-grade Grizz crushed the home team 46-18, leading 26-4 at halftime after outscoring Ten Sleep 15-0 in the second quarter. Winland scored 18 points on nine-of-12 shooting, Moss 12, Kreegan Jones 6, Hayes and Ward 5 each.

The Grizz rocked Ten Sleep 32-2 in the seventh-grade game as Sponsel scored 11 points, May 10, Tejeo Scheeler 6, Jayden Scheeler 3 and Miller 2.

Rocky dominated the sixth-grade game 58-4 as Brost scored 13, Wilson 12, Tyler Crosby 9, Dally Malson and Cooley 6 each, Hudson Moore and Ty Samson 5 apiece, Xavier Hetland 2.

Thursday, the seventh and eighth graders play in Meeteetse at 5 p.m. while the sixth graders host Greybull at 5:30. The Grizz play three games in Burlington Friday starting at 2 p.m. and seventh- and eighth-grade games against Shoshoni Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

The Grizz play Powell Monday with the eighth grade in Powell at 4:15 p.m. and the sixth and seventh graders in Cowley. Rocky travels to Greybull Tuesday for a trio of games starting at 4:15 p.m.
