RMMS track team member Bassett breaks triple jump school record

With this being their first track meet of the season, Rocky Mountain Middle School track and field team started their season with a track meet hosted in Lovell. The Grizzlies came out with some strong times, heights and distances this last Saturday.

Among the impressive performances was Mason Moss’ sprints and jumps. Moss took first place in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 28.7 and also placed 2nd in two other races: 100-meter hurdles in 71.47 with Cooper Ward trailing behind coming in third with a time of 18.06 and tied with Trigdon Aagard from Burlington Middle School in high jump with a jump of 5-2. Moss also placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.71 seconds. 

The eighth grade throwers for the Grizzlies put on quite a show for the crowd. Cooper Winland came in first in the shot put for an impressive throw of 40-11.5 and a half inches. Evin Clendenen and John Mader also placed in the top 10. Clendenen placed seventh with a throw of 32-8.75 inches and Mader placed eighth with a throw of 32.1. 

The story for these throwers doesn’t stop here. Clendenen came in first on the discus with an outstanding throw of 114.9. Mader was right on his heels taking second place in the discus with a throw of 99-5.5 and Winland taking fourth with a throw of 95.8. 

Winland also placed fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 31-09.

Zach Unruh placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:41.94 and not long after that, he sprinted the 400-meter dash and placed first running a 1:03.32. He then ran the 800-meter dash and placed fifth with a dash of 2:35.64.

Ethan Haslem was right behind Unruh placing fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:06.58), eighth in the 800-meter dash (2:47.41) and ninth in the 1,600-meter dash (5:44.67).

Jaxx May had a great meet taking second in the high jump with a jump of 5-02 and placing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.54.

Ward vaulted himself into second place with a vault of 8-06.

7th grade – 200m dash- Jaxx May fourth, 27.82; triple jump- Jaxson Sponsel tenth, 24-01.50. 8th grade – 100m dash- Cooper Ward sixth, 12.79; 200m hurdles- Jaxon Hayes fifth, 35.26; long jump- Ward seventh, 13-11.50, Hayes eighth, 13-11.0; triple jump- Gary Gardner ninth,   26-08.00; shot put- Alex Walker tenth, 31-04.00

GIRLS RESULTS

Sawyer Bassett was a standout this weekend. She took first place in the triple jump and ended up beating the record for the Lady Grizzlies with a jump of 29-08.75. Bassett also leaped into third place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 21.32. 

Eighth-grader Kennedy Brimhall had a good weekend, as well. She took second place in the high jump with a jump of 4-08. Brimhall also took fifth place in two other events: the 100m dash with a time of 14.87 and the triple jump with a bound of 28-00.5.

Other girls (top 10) results were:

7th grade – high jump- Bassett fifth, 3-08; long jump- Annie Crosby eighth, 10-06.85, Bassett ninth, 10-05.25; triple jump- Crosby sixth, 21-07.50. 8th grade – 200m dash- Brimhall seventh, 31.89; 400m dash- Leah Haslem fifth, 1:19.10; 800m dash- Haslem ninth, 3:02.07; 1,600m run- Haslem fifth, 6:44.56.

The Grizzlies will travel to Shoshoni this Saturday. The field events start at 10 a.m. and the running events will begin at noon.
