Rocky freshmen stop Powell after JVs split
Rocky Mountain’s junior varsity and freshman boys basketball squads won two of three games during the past week.
The JVs, coached by Jeff Samson, fell to Greybull at home Friday evening, 38-21, but beat Shoshoni on the road Saturday, 40-27.
Greybull jumped on Rocky 18-2 in the first quarter Friday, and that’s all the Buffs needed, for although the Grizzlies played the visitors almost even the rest of the way, the damage had been done.
Jaxx May led the Grizz with 11 points, and Jaxson Miller added 5 points, Jaxson Sponsel 3 and Cameron Minchow 2.
Saturday in Shoshoni, it was the Grizzlies who started strong, outscoring Shoshoni 11-0 in the first quarter and cruising from there. May scored 16 points, Miller 11, Cooper Ward, Jayden Scheeler and Travis Crosby 4 apiece and Sponsel 1.
Freshmen
Tuesday evening in Cowley, the Grizzlies stopped visiting Powell 47-42 behind 23 points from May. Powell held a slim lead at halftime, 22-21, but a 13-3 third-quarter advantage for the Grizz left them up 34-25. Powell won the fourth 17-13, but it wasn’t enough.
After May, Ward scored 9, Sponsel 5, Scheeler 4, Minchow and Gary Gardner 3 each. May led the team with 11 rebounds, seven of them offensive boards.
“It was a pretty even game for the most part,” coach Taylor Winland said. “Going into halftime, we were down by 1, but we finally got some separation in the third. Powell, in response, cranked up the pressure. I was pleased that the boys executed their plays, and we had no single-digit quarters.”
The Rocky freshmen will host Greybull Monday and Burlington Tuesday with tip-off times both nights set for 6:15 p.m.
