Rocky Mountain Middle School’s Bassett, Moss break school records
Another meet, another school record.
One week after Sawyer Bassett set a school record for the Rocky Mountain Middle School seventh-grade girls squad, Mason Moss broke a record Saturday for the eighth-grade boys as the Grizzlies competed at the Shoshoni Invitational.
In Lovell on April 13, Bassett broke the seventh-grade triple jump record set by Kallee Wilson in 2008, sailing 29-8¾ to top Wilsons jump of 29-6½. Then on April 20 in Shoshoni, Moss won the eighth-grade boys 400-meter dash in 55.57 seconds, beating the time set by Hudson May of 56.81 in 2021, according to head coach Josh Sponsel.
Moss also won the 200-meter dash in the middle school (sixth and seventh grade) division Saturday in a time of 25.48, placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.69 and placed second in the long jump, sailing 16-11.
Eighth grader Cooper Winland won the middle school shot put Saturday with a throw of 39-5, and Alex Walker placed fourth at 32-2¼, John Mader fifth at 31-8¾.
Winland placed second in the discus with a toss of 106-8, and Mader placed fifth at 94-3, Walker 12th at 78-5.
Eighth grader Cooper Ward had a strong meet, as well. Ward won the long jump with a leap of 16-11, placed third in the 100-meter dash in 12.77, placed fourth in the 200-meter dash, running the half lap in 26.84, and placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 7-6.
The Rocky Mountain 400-meter relay team of Winland, Zach Unruh, Jaxon Hayes and Gary Gardner cruised the lap in 54.49 to win the middle school division.
Eighth grader Zach Unruh placed fifth in the middle school 1,600 meters in a time of 5:36.64 and eighth in the 800 meters in 2:30.56. He also finished 12th in the middle school 400 meters in 1:02.20.
Eighth grader Ethan Haslem placed eighth in the middle school 1,600 meters, and eighth grader Hayes placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-4½ and eighth in the triple jump at 32-3, with Winland ninth at 31-11½.
Seventh grader Jaxx May placed third in the middle school high jump, clearing 5 feet, and Brooks Brost won the sixth-grade high jump at 4-8 with Ty Samson 10th at 4-0.
Samson placed third in the sixth-grade triple jump, hitting the sand at 26-4, and Brost placed seventh in the sixth-grade long jump at 13-2 and 10th in the sixth-grade 200-meter dash in a time of 32.30.
Jason Unruh placed 10th in the sixth-grade 1,600 meters in 7:00.54 and finished 11th in the 800 meters in 3:19.67.
Hudson Moore finished 11th in the sixth-grade long jump with a top leap of 12-9, and Tyler Crosby finished 11th in the sixth-grade pole vault, clearing 6 feet.
Girls results
In the girls competition, eighth grader Kennedy Brimhall won the middle school high jump, clearing the bar at 4-4, and Elli Ganoung won the sixth-grade triple jump, sailing 25-8. Brimhall almost made top 10 in the middle school triple jump, finishing 11th at 26-3.
Eighth grader Leah Haslem placed sixth in the middle school 1,600 meters, covering the four laps in 6:23.51, and Taylor Grandalen placed sixth in the sixth-grade 1,600 in 7:01.64, with Mariah Mauch eighth in 7:12.84.
Haslem finished 11th in the middle school 800 meters in 3:00.42, Mauch 11th in the sixth-grade 800 in 3:31.22. Kaylie Watts finished 12th in the sixth-grade triple jump at 18-6.
Burlington Friday
With two meets on the initial schedule this weekend, the Grizzlies have chosen one and will attend the Burlington meet Friday, Coach Sponsel said.
Rocky is slated to host the Big Horn Conference Track Meet on Friday, May 3, with the middle school best-of-the-best meet to follow in Lander on May 7.
As for the Lovell Mustangs, the Lovell Middle School team was scheduled to compete in Cody Saturday, but the meet was cancelled. The Mustangs are scheduled to travel to Lander Friday.
