Sheriff report: Animal calls – 14 in all – keep deputies busy

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following other calls for the week of October 20-26:

October 20: 1:29 p.m. – A Deaver area resident complained that his neighbor across the street has a trash burn pit, and when the wind blows, trash blows onto their property. A sheriff’s spokesman said there is nothing that can be done because wind-blown trash is not considered to be littering.

October 21: 2:30 p.m. – A deputy responded to a report of sugar beets in the road on the south side of Byron at Riverview and Center and kicked the beets off the road.

2:44 p.m. – A deputy saw two cows out near Cowley and put them back in their pasture.

6:46 p.m. – A caller on West 1st South in Cowley called to report that a small brown dog with curly hair and a collar but no tags had come into her yard in case anyone called missing their pet.

October 22: 7:20 p.m. – A deputy responded to a report of a white Chevy Silverado that had struck a deer and kept going four miles west of Byron. The deer had died in the collision and was off the lane of travel.

October 23: 10:34 a.m. – A male caller in Deaver asked about rules for “re-homing” a dog that he saw wandering around the community. He was told there was no law against taking the dog in.

1:05 p.m. – A caller from Cowley reported that her former neighbors had raised chickens, and the birds had come onto her property. Though the new owners said they would care for the chickens, the caller stated that she had put them in her pen because there was no food or water at their own pen.

2:45 p.m. – A caller on Spence Road and Lane 16½ asked if anyone had reported a lost dog in the area, saying that the dog was wandering loose but wouldn’t get into his truck. He was informed that no one had called about a missing dog.

8:07 p.m. – A caller reported a suspicious or abandoned vehicle at the John Blue Canyon parking area east of Lovell. The owner was contacted and said the vehicle had broken down.

October 24: 8 a.m. – A report of a blue Toyota that had struck a deer two miles northeast of Byron on U.S. 14A was being handled by the Highway Patrol.

9:47 a.m. – A caller from the Crystal Creek Road reported seven cows on her property and said she was unable to move them due to her health. Contact was made with the owner, who sent an employee to move the cows back where they belong.

12:34 p.m. – A caller on Lane 6 near Cowley reported a missing black dog with white eyes, asking if anyone had seen the animal.

October 25: 5:53 p.m. – A caller on Road 6½ west of Cowley called to complain about drivers speeding up and down the county road, saying that “everybody is doing it” and that two of his dogs had been hit by cars in the recent past. Extra patrol on the road was initiated.

9:02 p.m. – A caller from the Byron Bar reported that there may be a customer in the bar who was on probation. Documentation showed that the patron was no longer on probation.

October 26: 8:03 a.m. – The North Big Horn Search and Rescue squad mobilized to look for missing hunters on the Bighorn National Forest in the area of the Sheep Mountain Road and Forest Service Road 11. The missing hunters, whose Razor had broken down, were picked up by a fellow hunter and taken to the staging area where the SAR was preparing for the search.

4:53 p.m. – A deputy responded to a report of four horses on the highway near Cowley on Road 7. When the deputy arrived, the horses were already being taken care of.

Jacklyn Sue Brown of Byron was arrested on October 24 for a bond violation.
