Sheriff report: Byron domestic violence report leads to arrest

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1:

August 26: 7:20 a.m. – A deputy discovered a dead deer in the road on Highway 310 near Frannie. He dragged the carcass off the highway.

8:44 a.m. – A caller reported that a neighbor backed into the reporting party’s pickup truck and drove off “as if nothing had happened.” However, the neighbor returned with his insurance information, and no deputy was needed.

7:49 p.m. – A caller reported that a couple of the neighbor’s dogs were chasing their horses. A deputy contacted the owner of the dogs, who said the kids must have let the dogs out of the house. She said she understands that dogs can be shot for chasing livestock and said she would tell the kids to watch the dogs if they let them out.

August 27: 10:49 a.m. – A caller reported that a Bobcat utility plate with a receiver hitch had apparently been stolen and asked if anyone had tried to sell the part or if it had been stolen. The reporting party signed paperwork allowing the incident to be entered into the National Crime Information Center database.

12:23 p.m. – A caller reported that a traffic sign at Road 9 and Lane 13 near the golf course was damaged, saying it was upright but leaning. The county road and bridge department was notified.

2:19 p.m. – A caller reported that male subjects were firing rifles into the hills from near the side of the highway on Highway 32 southeast of Lovell. A Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper responded and discovered that the shooters were actually well off the highway and shooting legally.

August 28: 8:59 a.m. – A caller reported a cow loose just northeast of Byron, saying that, while the cow was not currently in a lane of traffic, it could be a road hazard. The highway patrol was advised.

August 29: 5:31 a.m. – A reporting party called 911 about a domestic violence incident in progress in Byron, saying a male subject was witnessed pushing a female to the floor numerous times and that the female was crying. A deputy responded, and Michael Steven Bernard was arrested for domestic violence with bodily injury.

4:43 p.m. – A caller reported property damage in a residence on Road 8 near Lovell, stating that two televisions had been broken. A roommate admitted that one of the TVs had been knocked over by the roommate’s backpack. The residents were informed that the incident was a civil matter.

August 30: 12:43 a.m. – A caller reported that five horses were loose next to Rocky Mountain Middle/High School. A deputy responded, but only horses secured in a nearby pasture could be found.

12:01 p.m. – A caller reported a suspicious incident where an older white male was reaching into a mailbox. A deputy spoke to the caller and reviewed video of the suspicious person. The deputy recognized the man and spoke to him, discovering that the man was trying to leave money for a vehicle repair and had gone to the wrong residence.

August 31: 10:44 p.m. – A deputy came upon a motorist who was having mechanical troubles. The deputy followed the motorist home to make sure he got home safely.

September 1: 8:20 p.m. – A caller reported that an English bulldog and a brown pit bull had showed up on the caller’s property. The caller gave the dogs water and gave the sheriff’s office permission to provide contact information in case someone called looking for the dogs.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
