Sheriff report: Failure to yield leads to collision in Cowley

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5:

December 30: 12:18 p.m. – A caller reported large chunks of dirt and ice in the middle of the road on U.S. 310 about 20 miles south of Lovell and was worried the traffic hazard could damage a small car. The Wyoming Highway Patrol was advised.

December 31: 6:08 a.m. – A caller reported that dogs had run out and grabbed her dog by the collar and also knocked her down. A deputy spoke with the offending dogs’ owner, who said he would make sure the dogs’ shock collars were on and working.

January 1: 12:17 a.m. – A deputy discovered a car parked along the highway in Frannie with the engine running and the driver asleep. The deputy made contact with the driver, and Matthew Geoffrey Durney of Basin, 33, was arrested for DUI.

January 2: 4:52 p.m. - A black cow was reported out on the highway between Garland and Deaver. The Wyoming Highway Patrol was notified.

10:14 p.m. – A caller reported that she had just slid off the highway on Road 9 and hit a fencepost. She said she was not injured, but her bumper can come off in the collision. The driver wished to report the slide-off for insurance purposes, and the Sheriff’s Dept. said they would make contact with the owner of the fence.

January 3: 2:30 p.m. – A driver in Cowley reported that he had stopped at a yield sign in Cowley, then proceeded across an intersection but was distracted by his dogs and did not see a vehicle coming from the side until it was too late. Richard Thielmann, driving a 1993 GMC, collided with a Dodge Neon driven by Roxanne Alcorn. Both vehicles had to be towed.

January 5: 12:55 p.m. – A welfare check was requested and executed on Road 7 near Cowley.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
