Sheriff report: Firework and driving complaints, deer/vehicle collisions keep deputies busy

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of June 30-July 6:

June 30: 12:55 a.m. – A vehicle vs. deer collision was reported on Wyoming 32 southwest of Lovell. The vehicle of the Otto resident was disabled, and a tow truck was called.

10:40 a.m. – A disturbance was reported on East Third North in Cowley involving two brothers arguing. A deputy responded and found that nothing physical had occurred. The two brothers went their separate ways.

4:26 p.m. – A REDDI report called in stated that a lime green Toyota 4-Runner was “swerving all over the road and spending a lot of time in the oncoming lane of traffic” in the Deaver area. A deputy made contact and was told by the vehicle occupants that one of them had just had surgery and they were trying to get the person home quickly.

6:34 p.m. – A deputy responded to the scene of a minor motorcycle accident at the Oasis Junction west of Lovell. A motorcycle with two persons aboard slipped down on gravel at the intersection where U.S. 310 and 14A diverge. There were no injuries to the Deaver residents riding the bike.

 8:17 p.m. – Cows were reported out on Road 5 north of Byron, but by the time a deputy arrived, they had “put themselves back in” so the deputy merely secured the gate.

July 1: 3:31 a.m. – A vehicle vs. deer collision west of Cowley was referred to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

11:19 a.m. – A caller reported a semi swerving “all over the road” near Frannie. A deputy pulled the truck over and issued a warning for lane usage.

11:56 a.m. – In a continuing series of complaints, a caller reported a red corvette once again speeding up and down Lane 13 south of Lovell. Extra patrol has been conducted, but the culprit has not been caught in the act.

5:33 p.m. – A loose calf on Wyoming 37 east of Lovell was put back in its pasture by a deputy.

6:03 p.m. – A tree blocking both lanes of traffic was reported at Lane 5 and Road 2 northeast of Deaver. County Road and Bridge was called to take care of the blockage.

July 2: 6:39 a.m. – A caller from Byron reported that an air tag was placed on her ice cream trailer while she was at the Cody Stampede. The matter was referred to the Cody Police Department.

1:16 p.m. – A deputy noticed a Wisconsin truck with smoking brakes coming down U.S. 14A on the steep switchbacks on the west face of the Big Horns. A deputy stopped the truck and told the driver to pause and let the brakes cool.

1:43 p.m. – A deputy picked up Kianna Flores on a Park County warrant and transported her to meet a Park County deputy.

4:33 p.m. – A caller reported sending a check to a credit card company, but although the company did not receive the payment, the check cleared the bank with the face of the check changed. The caller needed to make a law enforcement report as requested by the bank.

10:07 p.m. – A deputy came upon a semi partially blocking the highway on U.S. 310 about five miles south of Lovell. The driver said the truck had “hot brakes but no burning flame” and had stopped to let the brakes cool.

Ty Russell Burbank of Byron, charged the previous week with felony strangulation of a household member, was re-arrested on a bond violation.

July 3: 3:03 p.m. – A deputy assisted a driver who had locked keys in the car at the Foster Gulch Golf Course.

4:27 p.m. – A suspicious male subject was reported in the Cowley town park, reportedly living in a van and showering at the Cowley pool and at Club Dauntless. A spokesman said the man “shows up every summer.”

8:17 p.m. – A reported abandoned vehicle at Mormon Point in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area turned out to be a vehicle reserving a camping spot.

9:54 p.m. – A deputy struck a deer on Highway 37 while returning from checking out the above abandoned vehicle. No damage was done to the patrol vehicle.

July 4: 10:12 a.m. – A caller from Byron reported finding a dog that had been hit by a car and asked if the county could pay for a trip to the veterinarian. Told no, the caller placed the dog on Facebook, and the owner came to retrieve the dog.

12:42 p.m. – A caller from Mustang Mountain Drive near Cowley complained that a neighbor had been starting fires late at night with manure, with the smoke coming onto the caller’s property. The complainant was informed that there is no county ordinance against burning manure.

4:17 p.m. – With the owner out of town, deputies put loose horses out near the carwash in Cowley back into their pasture.

July 5: 12:53 a.m. – A caller near Lovell asked about their rights regarding neighbors shooting off fireworks late at night. There is no ordinance regarding fireworks in the county outside of town limits.

4:04 p.m. – A caller found an American Bulldog wandering around town in Cowley. The caller was advised to take the dog to a veterinarian to see if the dog was chipped, and if not, to let the dog go.

9:29 p.m. – Kids were seen on a surveillance camera at the old school in Byron throwing a rock at a window and shooting a firework through a different, broken window. The case is under investigation.

9:58 p.m. – A caller in Deaver asked a deputy to speak to a neighbor about shooting fireworks the last two nights near town hall and the park in Deaver. The caller was told to report the issue to the Town of Deaver because Deaver has an ordinance but no officer to enforce it.

July 6: 4:48 p.m. – Reported loose horses on Lane 11½ near Lovell were put back in their pasture by the owner.

8:29 p.m. – Search and Rescue assisted residents of Montana whose boat had broken down in the Narrows near Horseshoe Bend. The rescue squad got the boaters safely back to the marina.

10:38 p.m. – Reported overdue boaters were found to have helped the Montana boaters who had broken down, making them late returning home.
