Sheriff report: Grateful woman retrieves wallet found by deputy near sugar factory

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of April 20-26:

April 20: 5:56 a.m. – Two deputies were unable to locate a black cow reported to be “out on the roadway” on Road 7 near Cowley.

3:55 p.m. – A caller reported a dark suburban hitting its breaks repeatedly, stopping, and then moving again on Road 6½ near Cowley. The caller made contact with the driver, who said he was collecting cell tower data. A deputy also made contact and found the same thing.

6:07 p.m. – A man reported finding a dog on East Main in Lovell, saying the dog jumped into his truck.  He took it home and was advised by dispatch to take the dog back where he found it, but he said he would put it on Facebook.

April 21: 9:26 a.m. – Horses were reported out on Road 1 near Deaver, an ongoing issue that the reporting party wanted to document with the sheriff’s office.

10:53 a.m. – A deputy found a wallet in the middle of the road near the sugar factory. Dispatch made contact with the female owner, who was en route to the airport in Billings with her family. She said she had left it on the hood of the car while fueling for the trip. A deputy met the family in Deaver.

April 22: 11:58 a.m. – A caller reported a cow alongside the highway about two miles northeast of Byron on U.S. 14A. When contacted, the owner said he would put the cow back in its pasture.

12:04 p.m. – A Byron resident reported a dog at large on North Heart Mountain Street, noting that it was acting in an aggressive manner toward her and her husband. When contacted, the owner said he had found where the dog had gotten out and would correct the situation.

5:38 p.m. and 8:50 p.m. – A gold Pontiac was reported unattended about 18 miles south of Lovell on U.S. 310.

April 23: 9:13 a.m. – A caller reported following a white Ford Ranger with a female driver unable to maintain a lane of travel just south of the Oasis Junction on U.S. 14A. A deputy was unable to locate the vehicle.

10:34 a.m. – The Wyoming Highway Patrol called to report a green Toyota Tundra with a possibly intoxicated driver leaving Powell to the east, notifying the sheriff’s office in case the vehicle entered Big Horn County.

11:39 a.m. – The same green Pontiac reported the evening before 18 miles south of Lovell was found to have a shattered window and was to be tagged for towing.

April 24: 10:35 p.m. – Deputies responded to a report of a 2009 Ford Escape that had been driven by a juvenile driver into an irrigation ditch in Byron. The air bag deployed, and there were no injuries. No alcohol was involved in the crash, which was attributed to distracted driving. A tow truck was called to pull the vehicle out of the ditch.

April 25: 2:38 p.m. – A deputy was unable to locate a black calf reported out on U.S. 310 and Road 10 near Lovell.

April 26: 7:17 p.m. – A deputy assisted at the scene of a fire call on Road 16 east of Lovell off U.S. 14A after a trailer at the location was filled with smoke due to a space heater shorting out.

9:51 p.m. – A deputy assisted the Wyoming Highway Patrol at the scene of a car vs. cow collision about five miles east of Lovell on 14A. The livestock owner was on scene, and a tow truck was called for the vehicle.

Jesse Whiting Montanez Jr. of Lovell was arrested April 23 on a warrant for failure to appear.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
