Sheriff report: Moose pays a visit to Cowley last week

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of November 24-30:

November 24: 8:27 a.m. – A caller reported seeing a moose in Cowley near the county shop on the west edge of town. The moose then tried to come through a fence on the caller’s property. Game and Fish was notified, but there were no further sightings.

10:35 a.m. – A Greybull resident called to report a scam in which he had reportedly missed jury duty and, upon receiving a call from a purported deputy, was going to have to pay a large fine and face jail time. Since the person being scammed was a former sheriff’s detention deputy, he didn’t fall for the scam but wanted to report it.

12:05 p.m. – A caller from Cowley reported a package stolen worth a couple of hundred dollars. The reporting party needed a law enforcement report to present to Amazon but did not request an investigation.

6:53 p.m. – A report of a fire on Blue Hill south of Lovell on U.S. 310 turned out to be blowing snow.

November 25: 2:22 p.m. – A deputy served municipal dog ordinance violation papers to a resident in Byron.

6:36 p.m. – An older resident of Frannie who doesn’t see well drove his vehicle into a ditch. A deputy gave him a ride to his home.

8:42 p.m. – A report of possible elder abuse in Lovell was referred to the Lovell Police Department.

November 26: 8:29 p.m. – A REDDI report was called in regarding a black Ford “dualy” pickup swerving and not maintaining speed just east of Deaver. The vehicle could not be located.

November 27: 5:10 p.m. – A caller reported that her daughter was involved in a verbal dispute with a male. Deputies responded and found the dispute to not be physical in nature. The parties were separated for the night.

8:15 p.m. – A caller from Road 11 near Lovell complained of fireworks being set off. Fireworks are not illegal beyond the town limits (in the county) if they are being shot on private property.

November 29: 12:44 a.m. – Three miniature horses were reported out on the west edge of Cowley. A deputy returned them to a field.

1:58 p.m. – A caller on East Main in Byron reported that someone drove through their yard sometime the previous night. The vehicle ran over a tree, which was relatively undamaged, and struck a decorative yard rock, losing a mud flap in the process.

November 30: 8:50 a.m. – A caller reported a lost male German shorthair pointer, white with brown spots, last seen on Thanksgiving in the Yellowtail Wildlife Habitat Unit east of Lovell. The dog has a chip, and the caller hoped someone would have taken the dog to a shelter or veterinarian, if found.

3:01 p.m. – A deputy stopped to assist a motorist from Montana who had pulled over with a flat tire. Help was on the way from Montana.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
