Sheriff report: Vehicle slide-offs keep deputies busy during cold weather

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of Feb 3-9:

February 3: 9:47 a.m. – A caller reported two border collies on Road 9½ that appeared to be in poor health. The Town of Lovell agreed to take the dogs at the animal control shelter due to their condition, and they are available for adoption.

10:01 a.m. – A call regarding an accident with property damage on Highway 32 near Byron was referred to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

4:37 p.m. – A man in Deaver reported receiving what he believed to be a suspicious package in the mail because it came from England, but when a deputy responded and opened the package, it turned out to be some hat cushions he had ordered, not realizing the items would be shipped from overseas.

February 4: 7:12 p.m. – Deputies responded to a rollover accident on the Georgia-Pacific Road with the driver in the car and unable to get out. Deputies and the Lovell Volunteer Fire Department were able to free the man, James Hamilton of Powell, from the car.

11:24 p.m. – A deputy noticed a red Subaru that had slid into the ditch on U.S. 310 south of Lovell near Lovell Lakes. The vehicle was later removed after being tagged.

February 5: 9:15 a.m. – An anonymous caller reported chickens in poor condition on First Avenue West in Deaver. A deputy checked on the birds, and they had shelter and didn’t appear to be in distress.

4:19 p.m. – A deputy helped warn oncoming traffic as cows were being moved across the highway near Cowley.

8:56 p.m. – A slide-off near the Lovell Community Center just west of town was referred to the Wyoming Highway Patrol for investigation.

February 6: 8:25 a.m. – A caller reported a suspected impaired driver on Lane 13 south of Lovell, but the driver was simply revving the engine in trying to free the vehicle after it had gotten stuck.

9:52 a.m. – An ongoing issue between neighbors in Deaver reared its head again with one party’s horses getting into a neighbor’s pasture. The owner of the horses was contacted and informed that the horses would have to be removed by that afternoon or the owner would be charged with livestock at large. A deputy checked later, and the horses had been put back.

February 7: 7:24 p.m. – A small to medium sized shorthair dog, reddish brown, was found loose near Rocky Mountain High School. The caller said the dog would be put on Facebook but asked the sheriff’s office to share the reporting party’s phone number in case someone called to report a missing dog.

February 8: 10:31 a.m. – A caller reported a suspected larceny after an Amazon package arrived with nothing inside. The caller needed documentation to report the incident to Amazon.

February 9: 12:48 and 4:08 p.m. – Two separate calls came in about an unoccupied vehicle on the Spence Road southeast of Lovell with tracks leading away from the vehicle. It turned out to be people hunting coyotes on public land. A deputy had followed the tracks to make sure everything was OK.

5:07 p.m. – A car slide-off that damaged a fence on Road 5 near Byron was being handled by the two parties involved.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
