Swimmers qualify at weekend meets
The Powell boys swim team competed in two events this past weekend.
On Friday, Jan. 24, they competed in a triangular at home. The teams competing were Cody, Powell and Worland. Powell had many podium finishes, personal bests and state qualifiers.
Qualifiers from Big Horn County included Taggart Shumway in the 1 meter dive; Will Fuller in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly and 200 IM; Conner Mayes in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 fly and 200 IM; and Hugh Carpenter in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 fly and 200 IM.
Some new personal bests from the triangular include Carpenter in the 50 free, with a time of 23.68 seconds, taking first place, and Mayes in the 100 free with a time of 56.66 seconds, placing second.
New personal bests from the Bruce Gresly Invitational on Saturday in Lander include Fuller in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.56, taking sixth place, and the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.44, taking sixth place; and Mayes in the 500 free, with a time of 5:59.99, taking 10th place, and the 200 IM with a time of 2:24.91, good for eighth place.
Other placers were Fuller, fourth in the 200 freestyle, second in the 500 freestyle and second in the 200-yard relay; Shumway, fourth in the 200-yard IM and third in the 1-meter diving; Mayes, second in the 100 freestyle; Gabe Buchholtz, sixth in the 100 butterfly; and Carpenter, first in the 50-yard freestyle and first in the 100-yard butterfly.
Powell also had a team take second in the 200-yard medley relay consisting of Fuller, Mayes, Carpenter and Shumway. Additional placings from the 25th were Carpenter, taking third in the 200 IM and third in the 100 fly, and Fuller, taking sixth in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 backstroke.
