Kade Baxendale’s famous cornhole tournament was at it again Tuesday to be a kickoff event for this year’s Lovell Mustang Days. Baxendale is not only well known for his hardware store, KB Lumber and Hardware, but he is also famous for his cornhole tournaments.

This is the fifth year Baxendale has held this tournament, and this year the tournament was held in the Armory Park. The turnout was pretty good with 46 participants, meaning 23 teams, and lots of fans to watch.

“Turnout was great, and it was a lot of fun. We were down from last year but still a good turnout,” Baxendale said.

The tournament started out in a round robin format allowing everyone to play a few games before the elimination process started. This way each team was guaranteed at least three games. After two games in round robin, each team was randomized against another, and the elimination started. Slowly, the teams made their way down to the top three.

This year’s first-place winners were Tom and Trey Scott of Powell. Second were Kyle and Mason Leithead and trailing them were Billy Cummings and Greg Noel of Cody. The first-place battle between the Scotts and the Leitheads was tight. The Leitheads beat the Scotts in the winners bracket 21-16, forcing them to play another round. Unfortunately, the Leitheads couldn’t do it again and took a loss of 21-2.

Baxendale said he appreciates the help he received with the tournament, noting, “Big thanks to Kyle Leithead and the American Legion in Powell.”
