Unclaimed property’s high payout exceeds $160 million

The State Treasurer’s Office paid $23.76 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

Payments from the Unclaimed Property Division of the Wyoming State Treasurer’s Office continue to climb as 40.6 % of all money paid during the program’s history has occurred over the past two years alone. 

A combination of 7,621 checks and wire transfers reunited $23.76 million to its rightful owners in the fiscal year that ended June 30 (FY26), while another $41.32 million was paid in FY25. 

The largest payment during the past fiscal year was for $976,842.13. A total of 43 payments during FY26 exceeded $100,000, with 17 of those payments being made via foreign wire transfer and 26 checks being mailed to locations throughout Wyoming and other areas of the country. 

Despite these efforts, the state continues to hold more than $349 million along with numerous shares of securities as well as safe deposit box contents that have been abandoned.
