As the 2024-25 school year approaches, Lovell school superintendent Doug Hazen is excited to welcome students, parents and staff back for another year of learning and growth, with significant updates to school facilities and a continued commitment to fostering a positive environment for students.

One of the key challenges facing the district this year has been ensuring consistent transportation for students. Hazen shared that while there were concerns about maintaining the school’s six bus routes due to driver shortages, the district has managed to find a solution.

“We’ve worked out a plan with substitute and part-time drivers to keep all six routes operational,” Hazen said. “Although students on certain routes may see a rotation of drivers, our priority is keeping transportation stable and reliable.”

Despite the logistical challenges Hazen expressed gratitude for the community’s response and support.

“We’re doing what we’ve got to do to keep things moving, and it’s comforting to know we have the community’s backing,” Hazen said.

The new school year brings several exciting updates to Lovell schools, with a particular focus on enhancing the learning environment and school facilities.

One of the most anticipated changes is the resurfacing of the high school track. The track, which has been a vital part of the school’s athletic program, is getting a fresh look with completely new colors. The track is going to be blue with black exchange zones where the batons are handed off.

“It’s going to look really nice, and it’ll be a great way to kick off the school year,” Hazen said.

Significant improvements have also been made at the middle school, where a two-year HVAC project has just been completed. This project has introduced air conditioning throughout the entire building for the first time, a major upgrade that will make a noticeable difference in the comfort of students and staff. In addition to the HVAC system, the middle school has undergone a series of cosmetic upgrades.

“We’ve put in new carpeting, fresh paint and even updated the logo to align with the district’s Bulldog mascot,” Hazen said. “The middle school used to be the Mustangs, but now we’ve unified the school spirit across all grades with the Bulldog theme. The front entries were also redone with new cement, so the school is really going to feel like a new building when students return.”

He believes these updates will have a positive impact on students’ attitudes and school pride.

“When students walk into a building that feels fresh and modern, it can really set the tone for the year,” Hazen said. “It’s all part of creating an environment where students feel proud of their school and are excited to learn.”

Beyond all of the physical updates, Hazen emphasized the importance of attitude and community in shaping the school year. As students and staff return, the district is focusing on fostering a positive environment where everyone feels valued and supported. Hazen also underscores the importance of communication between the district and families.

“We want to make sure that parents feel comfortable reaching out to us. Good communication is key, especially in a community like ours where we all know each other and are working together for the best outcomes for our students,” Hazen said.

He offered a message of encouragement to students and their families as they prepare for the new school year.

“Let’s make this year memorable in the best way possible,” Hazen said. “We’re here to support our students, to help them grow and to make sure they have a positive experience. We’re all in this together, and I’m confident that with a positive attitude and strong community support, this will be a fantastic school year.”

Hazen’s message is clear, that Lovell schools are ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of the 2024-25 school year with great enthusiasm, positivity and a commitment to its students and the community.
