Wyoming Gem and Mineral Show coming up in Cody
The Shoshone Rock Club of Powell and the Cody 59ers Rock Club are co-sponsoring the 2024 Wyoming State Gem and Mineral Show May 30 through June 1 at the Park County Fairgrounds in Powell.
The theme is Minerals of Wyoming, and the show will feature 15 vendors, a free lecture series, children’s activities, educational features and presentations, a UV light display, showcases, field trips and more.
Talented artisans will demonstrate their rock-related skills. Dan Dalton of Powell will demonstrate how to knap obsidian to make arrowheads, spearheads, knives and the like. Luke Rudolph of Montana will show how he carves Montana agates and other stones. And “Lapidary Gary” Olson, also of Powell, will demonstrate how he grinds and polishes semi-precious stones for jewelry. Gary is blind, and he grinds and polishes stones completely by touch.
A Pebble Pup Day for children on Saturday, June 1, features two free workshops to teach kids how to identify common rocks found in the Big Horn Basin, as well as a climbing wall, door prizes and activities for children and more, in addition to the show’s other attractions.
This show is for people who are interested in rocks and minerals or those who would just like to see and know more about them; it is not just for avid rockhounds.
