Youth triathlon Saturday

The format of the annual Mustang Days Triathlon has changed a bit this year. Instead of both adult and youth divisions, the triathlon this year will only have a youth division.

The reason for the change, according to Kristine Henley, director of the Lovell Recreation District, which sponsors the event, is because Lovell Rec will sponsor the return
of the Big Horn Canyon Triathlon on Saturday, July 6, in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

This year’s Mustang Days Youth Triathlon will take place Saturday at 10 a.m., with
teams and individual competitors able to check in starting at 9 a.m. at the Lovell High School athletic complex.

The triathlon is geared toward youths 8 through 18, but Henley said Lovell Rec and BOCES won’t turn away adults who want to enjoy the event, such as a family wanting to participate together. Swimmers must be able to swim without assistance, she added.

The first 15 competitors to show up will receive a goodie bag, Henley noted.

Competitors may enter as individuals at $10 each, or as a team at $20 per team. Henley said four teams had registered as of Tuesday.

“It’s fun and fitting for Lovell Rec to sponsor the youth triathlon,” Henley said. “There are no awards. We’ll keep time, but it’s just for fun.”

“Parents can run with their kids, and even adults are welcome.”

The triathlon will begin with a 100-meter swim, four laps at the Lovell Pool, followed by a mile and a half bicycle ride in the neighborhood starting
at the intersection of Carmon and Bulldog east of the
gym and pool. The third leg is a half mile run.
