In 1929, a young German physician named Werner Forssmann carried out a bold and unauthorized medical experiment. He inserted a catheter into a vein in his own arm and carefully advanced it all the way into his heart. He then walked to the radiology department and took an X-ray, proving the catheter had reached his atrium.
