Twomey captures two additional state titles at WAWA championships

Rocky Mountain High School junior wrestler Masen Twomey added two more state titles to his growing resume last weekend. Competing at the Wyoming Amateur Wrestling Association Championships in Sheridan, Twomey won the 215-pound division in both freestyle and Greco-Roman competition.

In freestyle wrestling, Twomey defeated Deagon King from Wright High School in the semifinals, pinning him in 2:15. He then advanced to the championship match, where he secured another pin against Rodolfo Gonzalez of Natrona County, finishing the match with just 20 seconds remaining to claim the title in 5:40.

Twomey also dominated the Greco-Roman bracket. In the semifinals he defeated Gonzalez by technical fall, ending the match early with a 10-0 score in 1:34. In the championship match, Twomey needed less than a minute to secure his second title, pinning Brayden Calmes of the Glenrock Wrestling Club in just 58 seconds.

Those two titles add to the 2A folkstyle state championship Twomey captured earlier this season at the Wyoming High School Activities Association state tournament. Folkstyle is the traditional style of wrestling used in most U.S. high school competitions, emphasizing control and scoring through takedowns, escapes and riding time.

“This wrestling season meant a lot to me, and I’m really proud of the success I had,” Twomey said. “Our team was like a family. We were always there for each other, watching each other’s matches and supporting one another throughout the season. All three of our coaches were incredibly supportive and helpful, and I’m grateful they were by my side.”

Twomey plans to continue competing this summer at the national wrestling tournament in Fargo, North Dakota.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to compete against tougher competition and have more opportunities to grow as a wrestler,” he said.
