Garcia, Schilthuis receive top honors at State Art

Eighteen Lovell High School students received ribbons at the Wyoming State Art Symposium in Casper April 29-May 1.

Senior Elana Schilthuis received five ribbons for her works including second place in the United States 250th Anniversary Competition. Sophomore Anthony Garcia won the First Lady Award for his piece.

The annual competition was held at the Ford Wyoming Center (Casper Events Center).

For the First Lady Award, the governor’s wife, Jennie Gordon, toured through the Ford Wyoming Center to peruse all of the artwork and picked 20 pieces to go to the governor’s mansion for an entire year, LHS art teacher Tera Kostelecky said.

The 250th Anniversary Competition was open to all students during the months leading up to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Kostelecky said. A group of judges then picked three to travel around Wyoming for the next year and perhaps on to Washington, D.C., she said.

In addition to Schilthuis and Garcia, senior Janemarie McKay and junior Kate Cooper were awarded three blue ribbons each at State Art, and seniors Rebecca Allred and Paitynn Underhill and sophomore Caylee Herman were awarded two ribbons each.

Also receiving blue ribbons were  Macie Anderson, Daisy Carpenter, Brooklin Clark, Toree Herman, Addison James, Celeste Lindsay, Hudson Miller, Kannon Owens, Leah Sockey, Eliza Wagner and Addie Weber.
