Rocky Mountain School parking lots get major upgrade: New parking lots on both sides of the football field aim to ease game-day parking frustrations

A pavement project has been underway at the Rocky Mountain Middle High School this summer that will add a stadium parking lot on both sides of the football field and have site drainage improvements. 

Midway Construction and Dirt Work was awarded the contract after submitting the lowest bid, and they are actively working on this project. Additional companies such as Quality Asphalt out of Cody, MCM Construction out of Gillette, and Pryor Mountain Engineering have a hand in the project, as well.

“The reason for this project is the old parking lots were just a couple inches of road base on top of clay creating a mess,” said RMMHS facilities director Kenny May. “Midway Construction was the low bidder, Pryor Mountain Engineering (a Stahly Company) are the engineers. Low bid plus engineering costs is around $674,255.”

The scope of the project is to install additional parking lots with both regular and handicap accessible spots. The project includes excavating down two feet to get rid of clay material and install 16” of pit run and 5” of crushed base with an additional 3” of asphalt. Additionally, the project will bore in a drain line under the ground on each side of the field to direct standing water into a drainage ditch.

“For me being a local business owner, it is great to be able to do a local project. I take a lot of pride in the work that we do, and bidding and winning these jobs add into that pride,” said Pete Baxendale, owner of Midway Construction and Dirt Work.

The final completion date for this project is set to be August 15. Just in time for the first day of football practice on August 17.
