100 years ago, July 30, 1926

The entire state was taken by surprise Tuesday, the 13^th, by the news that Nellie Tayloe Ross, governor of Wyoming, had filed her petition with the secretary of state’s office indicating an intention to seek a renomination for the office at the hands of the Democratic party. 

Now that the situation has been thus clarified the campaign may be said to be “on” in earnest, and no doubt cold facts as to her conduct of this important state office, as a basis for an appeal to the voters for renomination and re-election, will supplant glittering generalities and fulsome personal adulation. The governor is now for the first time before the people of the state strictly on her merits and her record. The question, “What has she done?” must be answered definitely, without sympathetic emotion.

Ray Acuff and company advertises a dance and jamboree at the Cowley community hall on next Tuesday, Aug. 7. This hillbilly band from Nashville, Tennessee, recently completed a motion picture in Canada and are on their way back to Nashville. They advertise both square and round dancing with a radio show.

50 years ago, July 29, 1976

The Lovell Chronicle

Kirk Jameson worked with firemen as flames licked through the sides of a storage building at Haskell’s here last Wednesday. Firemen and passersby fought the blaze from the other side. The fire damaged the Haskell Funeral Home hearse, a carpet machine, carpeting which had already been sold, bed materials and more. Total was estimated at $40,000 and maybe higher by Thales Haskell, who was in San Francisco during the fire. It is unknown how the fire started; arson has not been ruled out.

The Western Sugar Company, part of Tate and Lyle North America, belongs to the Rocky Mountain Growers Cooperative now. Closing on the sale was scheduled for Tuesday, and cooperative attorney Randon Wilson announced Tuesday morning that the closing was in progress and everything would be completed effective July 31.

The Lovell Chronicle

Father Louis Shea, recently of Jackson, Wyo., has begun his charge of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lovell as of July 6. He serves the church in Greybull, as well. 

He described the focus of his ministry by saying, “In Wyoming, smaller churches, you have to focus on everything, but, of course, you’re going to be who you are. You’re going to focus. The focus is the life of the parish, to recognize the gifts of others in the parish. To be a good leader I need to discover how I can help others to lead. It all boils down to love God, love your neighbor. You won’t break any of the Catholic doctrine, the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes – anything that Jesus taught. If you can do that you will be following the teachings of the church,” he said.
