100 years ago, Aug. 6, 1926

The Cowley Progress

School Board District No. 28, Cowley, will receive bids for a truck driver on the following route: Leaving town 1/2 block north of Joe Taggart’s residence going east 2¼ miles to George Crosby’s ranch, returning west 3/4 mile, thence north ½ mile to W.R. Stevens’ ranch and returning south ½ mile to the main road, going west ½ mile, thence S.W. thru J.H. Tippets’ ranch, leaving field near H.T. Rappleye farm house, and west 1 mile to town.

Driver will furnish his own truck and agree to close the two gates on either side of J.H. Tippets’ farm.

Lovell businessmen are cooperating with the town officials and the Mountain States Power Company to stage a fitting celebration Friday evening when the new mercury vapor street lights are turned on for the first time. Most business houses are remaining open until 8 p.m. on Friday, and many are offering special bargains for shoppers who come downtown to witness the ceremony with the lights. 

Twenty-eight high intensity mercury vapor street lights, which will be turned on and off daily by an electric eye, have been installed on and adjacent to Main Street and the school section by workmen of the Mountain States Power Company, and will be dedicated and put into service the evening of August 10.

Two new businesses have opened in Lovell this week. Leonard Ranieri, formerly of Cody, has opened Lovell Boot and Shoe Repair in the former Sam’s Place building on West Main. Larry and Linda Smith, who recently moved here from Gillette, have located their Teen Town in the former Western Pool Hall on Montana. 

Ranieri says his business will sell tack, moccasins, boots and other leather goods as well as do repair work. Included in Teen Town are pool tables, pinball machines and facilties to provide music and serve refreshments.

Natalie Hessenthaler and Kieley Collins are engaged to marry Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Billings Montana Temple. The bride-elect is the daughter of Charles and Amy Hessenthaler of Byron, and the prospective groom is the son of LeRoy and Gail Collins of Lovell. Both Kieley and Natalie are attending the University of Wyoming, where Kieley is studying pharmacy, and Natalie will graduate this winter with a degree in finance and real estate.

Big Horn Little League umpire Jason Sumaya made history over the past couple of weeks as he was invited to officiate in the Wyoming District One tournament in Riverton July 16-23 and then at the Wyoming State Little League Tournament in Lovell. Sumaya is believed to be the first Lovell area umpire to work at both the district and state Little League Baseball tournaments.
