Sheriff report: Byron resident loses $15,000 in scam

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office received the following calls for the week of August 24-30:

August 24: 7:21 a.m. – A deputy spotted a loose dog in the highway on the west edge of Cowley, but the owner was on scene to retrieve the pet.

August 25: 9:15 a.m. – A caller reported stray dogs near the highway on U.S. 14A atop the Big Horn Mountains near the Hunt Mountain Road turnoff, likely livestock dogs.

4:53 p.m. – A caller from Road 10 near Lovell requested information about laws regarding stray dogs.

August 26: 8:39 a.m. – A resident of Byron was asked to send cash through the mail following a claim that the victim was under investigation for money laundering, having received an official looking letter. The victim sent $15,000, and when the victim spoke to a family member about the incident, the victim was advised the report it to the sheriff’s office. The case is under investigation.

6:38 p.m. – A deputy assisted with an arrest at Bair’s Trailer Court in Lovell. George Grant Ward was arrested for theft.

August 27: 7:13 a.m. – Deputies were advised by the Wyoming Highway Patrol of a traffic complaint in the Deaver area. The offending vehicle could not be spotted.

4:42 p.m. – The sheriff’s office was notified of a lightning-caused fire off the Crooked Creek Road in the Burnt Timber Canyon Wilderness Study Area. The Lovell Volunteer Fire Department responded.

9:01 p.m. – A caller reported hitting a deer with a blue Subaru Outback near the Medicine Mountain turnoff on the Big Horn Mountains. The deer was killed and pulled off the highway. The calling party was heading on toward Lovell.

9:24 p.m. – A call reporting a vehicle with a “really bright light bar, traveling at ridiculous speeds and passing in a no-passing zone” was referred to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

August 28: 7:17 a.m. – A deputy made contact with the driver of a disabled vehicle just east of Deaver and was informed that help was coming.

10:51 p.m. – A caller reported that someone had driven through and scatted numerous traffic cones at the bridge repair project east of Lovell, making it difficult to discern the proper lane of travel. A deputy responded and put several cones back in place, and WyDOT was to check on the project in the morning.

August 30: 12:19 p.m. – A caller reported cows out near the highway on Road 5 near Byron. The owner was contacted and said he would put the cows back where they belong.

8:29 p.m. – A break-in attempt at the old school in Byron was reported and is under investigation.

Note: The above calls were received by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and charges made upon initial arrest may be amended or dismissed as determined by the County Attorney.
