Each year, the Netherlands sends 20,000 tulip bulbs to Canada’s capital as a continuing symbol of gratitude for Canada’s role in World War II and the liberation of the Netherlands. Half come from the Dutch Royal Family and half from the people of the Netherlands.

At the 1948 Olympics, 30-year-old Dutch mother of two Fanny Blankers-Koen won four track-and-field gold medals despite critics saying she was “too old” and should stay home with her children. She returned home a national hero nicknamed “The Flying Housewife.” She remains the only woman to win four athletics gold medals at a single Olympic Games. Only two other people have done that since 1936: Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis.
