A.B.A.T.E., a motorcycle rights and safety organization, will hold its 40th annual toy run October 10. The group, whose initials stand for American Bikers Aimed Toward Education, was founded in 1972 and originally was known as the Alliance of Bikers Against Totalitarian Enactments. Member JR Megee said the organization advocates for riders’ freedoms and safety.

What began 40 years ago as a coat drive has grown into a toy drive. Megee, who has ridden with the club for 12 years, is organizing this year’s event. He said donations collected in each community remain there and are distributed to families in need in Lovell, Powell and Cody. Previous donations have gone to North Big Horn Hospital for its Angel Tree and to CARES. The club also has provided cash and meals directly to families in need.

The club is asking the public to donate new, unwrapped toys at any stop along the route. Cash donations also will be accepted. The day will begin at Four Corners at 11 a.m., with kickstands up at noon. The group will travel to the Red Zone in Powell to collect donated toys before continuing to the final stop at Libations in Cody. Megee said a chili feed will be held at Libations.

Everyone is welcome to ride or drive with the club on October 10, Megee said. Motorcycles are not required, and all vehicles are welcome.
