Sheriff’s report: Frannie man not pressing charges on own dog

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department received the following calls for the week of November 13 to November 19:
November 16: 3:03 p.m.- Vandalism was reported at Byron Town Park. Juveniles were reported to have vandalized a picnic table.
November 17:  5:08 p.m.- A car was reported for distracted driving on Hwy. 14. The driver was unable to maintain lane of travel and was driving at different rates of speed. The car was a dark dodge pickup, and a dog was in the back.

Mechanical bull in the county fair’s future

Big Horn County Fair manager Cash Duncan discussed the possibility of the county purchasing a mechanical bull during the Big Horn County commissioners’ November 7 meeting.
The idea had been discussed at previous fair board meetings. The board approved it contingent on cost of insurance, enough money left in budget and commissioner’s approval.
Duncan said insurance is available, but there is no money in this year’s budget to purchase it. The cost of the bull is $12,500, which includes the cost of a trailer.

Be on guard for these ‘errant’ texts – don’t respond and block the number.

Yellowstone’s October visits up 26% from year ago

JACKSON (WNE) — Recreational visits to Yellowstone National Park in October were up 26% over a year ago.
The total, 299,127 recreational visits represented a whopping 75% increase from October 2019, when “several short-term, weather-related road closures likely impacted visitation,” a Yellowstone press release said.
The park compares 2023 numbers to 2019’s because 2020 and 2021 produced unusual visitation trends due to COVID-19 and 2022 saw historic flooding that closed the park for about two weeks in June.

Commission agrees damage to airport runway in Greybull is nobody’s fault during October meeting

Speaking at the October 17 meeting of the Big Horn County Commission, Kip McIntosh of Cloud Peak Drags/KCT Racing and County Airport Manager Paul Thur agreed that the damage to the runway sealant at the Greybull airport was nobody’s fault.
Cloud Peak’s last race at the South Big Horn County Airport was in August. A test double coating had been put on the runway. The goal was to get more years out of the surface.

Senior Citizens Center salutes veterans with Friday program

The Veterans Day program on Friday at the North Big Horn Senior Citizens Center began with a group flag salute.
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” everyone recited.

Rocky Mountain Schools honor veterans with assembly

On Thursday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. a Veterans Day program was held at the Rocky Mountain High School Gym.
Stands were full across the gym, with community members sitting on one side and students on the other. The assembly started with members of the American Legion posting the colors. After that, the Rocky Mountain choir sang “God Bless the USA” by Lee Greenwood.

‘Merry and Bright’ Main Street Mingle Saturday in Lovell

The Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce hopes to light up the night as the Chamber kicks off the 2023 Christmas season Saturday with the annual Main Street Mingle.
After last year’s frigid event, this year’s weather promises to be much better, with the National Weather Service calling for mostly sunny conditions and a high of 53 on Saturday.

Lovell High School civics and history teacher Caleb Sanders spoke with pride about America’s veterans, while also reminding his audience that the best way to honor veterans is through uplifting, rather than negative, speech.
Sanders was the keynote speaker for the community Veterans Day program at the LHS Johnny Winterholler Gym Friday morning, hosted annually by Lovell Schools with the assistance of Robert Boys Stewart American Legion Post 11.

BLM cleanup cancelled after high school volunteers perform cleanup themselves

A Saturday cleanup at Frog Rock organized by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department has been called off.  A dozen Rocky Mountain students got to it first.
Frog Rock is located on Road 5 in the sand hills between Cowley and Byron.
Last week, Big Horn County Sheriff Ken Blackburn said dumping on BLM land has appeared to increase as of late, with the department seeing more examples of trash being illegally dumped on private land and hearing more complaints from residents regarding the problem.
