Class action TCT suit tossed out by Supreme Court

POWELL —- The Wyoming Supreme Court says a judge was right to throw out a lawsuit that challenged the 2014 sale of a Big Horn Basin telecommunications company.
A pair of former Tri-County Telephone Association board members alleged that leaders conspired to sell the business for much less than its worth, but District Court Judge Jason Conder tossed the class action suit last year.
 “The undisputed facts demonstrate that no civil conspiracy existed,” Conder concluded.

Main Street Mingle set for November 18

Lovell’s annual Christmas kickoff event, the Main Street Mingle, is ready to go on Saturday, Nov. 18, Lovell Area Chamber of Commerce manager Linda Morrison said.
This year’s theme is “The Christmas Town,” and businesses and residents are encouraged to dress up their windows and light up their homes to create a grand display of lights. The Town of Lovell has created new lighted wreaths that will line Main Street.

Sheriff Department organizes November 18 BLM-land cleanup to counteract illegal dumping

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department has had enough with people dumping trash on Bureau of Land Management land, and they are asking local residents to help them do something about it.
The Sheriff’s Department asks residents to meet up with deputies on November 18 at 10 a.m. at Frog Rock on Road 5 in the sand hills between Cowley and Byron.

North Big Horn Hospital recognized as top rural hospital for second year straight

North Big Horn Hospital has been recognized among the very best rural hospitals in the United States, winning the Performance Leadership Award for Excellence for the second year in a row.
The recognition comes from the Chartis Center of Rural Health, a consulting firm specializing in healthcare analytics.

Lovell Elementary students honored for Character Counts essays

Students at Lovell Elementary School were recognized for essays they wrote for the school’s annual Character Counts essay contest.
Preceding the submission of an essay, a Character Counts Week was held. Throughout the week, which was held in October, teachers led discussion about what it means to have good character. The week culminated with students writing essays about the importance of good character in their lives and what good character looks like for them.

Sheriff’s report: Mannequin in river confused for dead body

The Big Horn County Sheriff’s Department received the following calls for October 30 to November 6:
Oct. 30:  6:10 p.m. - Deputies received a report of a semi-truck stuck in heavy snow on Highway 14A East in the Big Horn Mountains. Wyoming Highway Patrol was notified and helped free the truck.

Oct 30: Officers were called to complaints of harassment on Montana Avenue from a family member who complained his sister was calling in continuous welfare checks on him as a way to harass him.

Northwest College to celebrate International Education Week

 POWELL – Northwest College will celebrate International Education Week November 13-17 with a series of lunch events each day. All five days will feature the cuisine of different countries represented among NWC’s international student population this year and will take place at the Bloom-Wilson Intercultural House located at 565 College Drive in Powell. Each lunch is free and open to the public, and will run from noon to 1 p.m.

Lovell/Rocky speech and debate season underway

Speech and debate coach John Mickelson has faith in all his team members.
“We expect great things from all of them, actually,” Mickelson said. “But like Kate Badget, she’s a returning state placer. All the kids actually have potential. It’s just if they want to get to do the work. Talent will get you so far, but actually getting in there … a lot of it is on them to be successful is the amount of work they put outside practice.”

BHC unemployment rate falls to 2.7%

The Research & Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services reported that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged from August to September at 2.9%.
Wyoming’s unemployment rate was much lower than its year-ago level of 3.8% and lower than the current U.S. rate of 3.8%.
Seasonally adjusted employment of Wyoming residents fell slightly (-403 individuals, or -0.1%) from August to September. However, compared to a year ago, employment was up by 7,745 people (2.7%).
